Schacht, Alice Virginia (Nee Munger) Age 92. Longtime resident of Madison, died Monday, January 10, 2011, at the Jewish Home and Care Center in Milwaukee. She was born in Centerville, Iowa, on September 21, 1918. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1940, she married Robert Schacht. She was the devoted mother of five children, Richard, Robert, Charles, Anita and James, a Milwaukee resident. Family was the center of her life. Alice earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from the UW, worked for a time as a social worker, and helped organize the Madison Urban Ministry and Befrienders' Program. She worked to promote peace and justice, and was a recipient of Madison Rotary's Swarsensky Humanitarian Service Award. Alice had a lifelong faith that guided her, and was active in the First Congregational Church of Madison for six decades. She was a gifted soprano, and shared her love of music with her children. Alice is survived by her children and their spouses, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and her sister Phyllis and brothers Leland and Edwin. She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 2001; her brother George, and her sister Joyce. Memorial services will be held in Madison on February 19 and at the Quaker Meetinghouse in Milwaukee at 1:30 pm, February 6. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Madison Urban Ministry.
