Carol J. Holt Notice
Holt, Carol J. Of Mequon, passed away on November 18, 2015. She was 89. Carol grew up on Downer Avenue and attended Shorewood High School, graduating in 1944. She earned a degree in home economics from UW-Madison. While attending school in Madison, Carol met Douglas Holt. They were married in 1948. For several years, Carol worked for Beech-Nut Baby Food in consumer testing. She grew up in a musical family and loved to sing; in the 1960s, she helped form The Belletones, a trio that performed at various Milwaukee-area events. For more than two decades, Carol was a driving force in Preserve Our Public Schools (POPS), an organization created to protect funding for public schools. Carol spent countless hours writing letters (she cared about words, taking great care to use the right ones), creating mailings and lobbying lawmakers in Madison. Over the years, Carol donated hundreds of hats, mittens and baby sweaters that she'd made to numerous charities. She lovingly made sweaters for friends and family, even for the family dogs. And she taught sewing and knitting classes. She was an avid rock hound, a hobby that prompted her to take jewelry-making classes at MATC. In addition to making jewelry for gifts, she sold her work at craft shows. Carol loved the outdoors: camping, fishing (she usually caught the biggest fish), waterskiing, cross-country and downhill skiing (which she took up in her 50s), swimming with her kids and, later, her grandkids. Carol loved gardening, especially tending to her beautiful iris; growing and canning vegetables; and making raspberry and currant jam and jelly. Carol was a devoted mother. She and Doug took their daughters Barbara and Lorna on many wonderful road trips throughout the country. Carol spent countless hours chauffeuring them to and from various school and after-school activities, especially Lorna, for whom she spent many hours sitting in freezing cold ice rinks, with her knitting in hand. Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Doug, who passed away October 7, 2015. She is survived by her daughters Barbara and Lorna (Pat Foran); and grandsons Eric, Sean and Cory. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, December 12, 2015, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Schramka-Densow Funeral Home, 423 N. Main Street, Thiensville, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the , , or (MDA) would be greatly appreciated.
