Gloria Rodriguez Kappel Notice
Kappel, Gloria Rodriguez Passed away gently at the Highlands Health Center at Newcastle Place, Mequon, WI, at age 103 on December 3, 2018. Born February 6, 1915. Former resident of Milwaukee and Clearwater, FL. Dearest lifelong friend of Iris and Bill Miller. Preceded in death by her beloved husband Edwin Kappel, parents Lee and Bella Rodriguez, and loving cousin Renee (Tom) Caldwell. Survived by other relatives, including in Spain and Italy, and numerous friends. Well-known voice teacher at the former Wisconsin College of Music (now Conservatory), with a second career as music teacher at the University School of Milwaukee. Graduate of Lincoln High School, the Wisconsin College of Music, and Alverno College. Member of Delta Omicron National Music Fraternity and the MacDowell Club of Milwaukee. Longtime member of the Unitarian Church, where she sang in the choir and performed as a soloist for many years. Especially missed by her "girls," members of the Romany Singers, the chorus of her selected voice students that she founded and directed (known as the Victory Singers during World War II); they performed throughout the Midwest and were featured on a weekly, live TV show in the 1940s and '50s. She also directed the Marquette Medical School Glee Club. Gloria made her singing debut as a lyric soprano at the Athenaeum of the Woman's Club of Wisconsin. She sang with the Wisconsin WPA Symphony Orchestra and performed with local musicians during her annual trips to Oaxaca, Mexico, one of her favorite places. Her voice students won numerous awards, and some went on to successful music careers of their own. Private interment at Wisconsin Memorial Park. A celebration of Gloria's life will be held at a later date at Newcastle Place. Memorials are suggested to a music organization of your choice.
