Joan Michaels Paque

1936 - 2017 Notice Condolences
Paque, Joan Michaels Joan was born on July 24, 1936 and Entered into Eternal Life on November 22, 2017 at the age of 81. A longtime resident of Shorewood, Joan was an internationally recognized artist, teacher and author. Joan, the youngest of five children, grew up in Menominee, MI. Following graduation from high school, Joan attended Layton School of Arts in Milwaukee on a scholarship. Joan met Henry Paque, also from Menominee, when she was 13 and married him on July 13, 1957. They were married for 58 years until Henry's passing in 2015. Together with Henry, she published three art books. Her artwork is found in many prestigious public and private collections including the Smithsonian Institution National Museum, the Southampton Art Museum, London, England and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Joan exhibited and taught in Australia, Japan, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the United States and spoke fondly of her time at the Australian National University, Canberra and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. She served on multiple boards and professional organizations and influenced and mentored many artists around the world. Her Facebook posts were followed and enjoyed by many. Joan was strong, independent and always gracious. Ahead of her time, she was the quintessential modern woman, balancing home and career. She never hesitated to share her amazing talents with the world. An absolutely brilliant human being, she led a full life of gratitude and humility. Her two loving daughters survive Joan: Julie Paque, a scientist at Caltech in Pasadena, CA who has a mineral named after her, Paqueite; and Elaine Paque, a marketing executive living in Northbrook, IL, with her husband, Jeremy Lieb, an ice skating coach. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, and parents Frank and Gertrude (nee Pfotenhauer) Michaels, sisters Marion (Patrick) Kass, Patricia Davis, Dorothy (Emerson) Blake, and brother Richard (Anne "Helen") Michaels. Joan will also be missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives, wonderful neighbors and good friends. She was preceded in death by her canine companions Mimi and London, and is survived by Cali. The family will greet friends at the Feerick Funeral Home on Friday, December 1, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Robert Catholic Church, 2224 E Capitol Dr, Shorewood on Saturday, December 2, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private. Donations in Joan's name may be made to Artists Working in Education (
