Joseph J. DiGiovanni Notice
DiGiovanni, Joseph J. Age 53, of Milwaukee passed away peacefully on January 9, 2019 surrounded by his family after battling cancer. He was born in Rockford, Ill. on March 11, 1965. Joe graduated from Hononegah High School in Rockton, Ill. He graduated with a B.A. in journalism from Marquette University in 1987. Joe worked at United Press International (UPI) as a reporter right out of college. He was the city editor of the Kenosha News, where he worked for 10 years, and met his wife, Stephanie. For decades, Joe was a regular in the press box at Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks games working for the Associated Press and MLB.com. A few of his many journalism accomplishments included breaking Stevie Ray Vaughan's fatal helicopter crash at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, bylines in The New York Times and interviewing three U.S. Presidents. Joe owned a Books Are Fun business with his wife, Stephanie. Most recently he was a senior communications specialist for Marquette University, a job that brought him great joy and many close friends. He had a zest for life. Joe was a proud Chicago Bear's season ticket holder. He especially loved coaching his children. Joe coached basketball at St. Jude the Apostle School where his children attended. He helped found Wauwatosa Shock Fast Pitch girl's softball. Joe loved Summerfest, family vacations, concerts, Strat-O- Matic and sporting events. Joseph is survived by his two children, Joseph Edward DiGiovanni and Genevieve Lee DiGiovanni, his wife Stephanie DiGiovanni, sister Ann-Drea (Daniel) Burns, brother Thomas (Etsako) Dobel and special family friend Sharon Sherer. He is preceded in death by his father Joseph William DiGiovanni and mother Patricia Lee DiGiovanni. Visitation is on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, 10121 W. North Avenue, Wauwatosa from 4 PM until 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 734 Glenview Ave., Wauwatosa at 10 AM. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
