Makal, Thomas J., Jr., Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.) Of Milwaukee passed away on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, in Hampton, VA. He was 64. Born in Sheffield, AL, on July 10, 1943, he graduated from Dominican High School in 1961 and the University of Wisconsin in 1965. Makal entered active duty in the United States Air Force on Aug. 1, 1965. During a four-year tour at the Pentagon from 1981-85, he incorporated the Global Positioning System (GPS) in to the Federal Radionavigation Plan, assisted NATO in incorporating GPS and the microwave landing system into its long-range architecture and replaced the Berlin Air Route traffic control radar. Lt. Col. Makal retired from the Air Force on July 31, 1993, after 28 years of distinguished service. His military decorations include the Bronze Star with combat V, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam's Staff Service Medal (First Class). Following his military service, Col. Makal was employed at BDM Engineering and TRW, now Northrop Grumman. He retired from TRW in 2003. In his free time, Makal was an avid low-handicap golfer and doted on his lawn and garden. We mourn the loss of this kind, loving, generous man, who was both wise and a true gentleman. He made the world a better place for all of those lucky enough to have known him. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Fox Point; his father, Thomas J. Makal Sr. of Mequon; sisters, Pat Rossman of Sun Prairie, Ann Buss of Glendale and Emily Waitzman of Roswell, GA; brother, John Makal of Menomonee Falls; twin daughters, Katherine Makal of Jersey City, NJ and Jennifer Leis of Seattle, WA; and grandson, Asher Leis. Visitation will take place Friday, January 25, 2008, from 5-7 PM, at the Feerick Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM at St Eugene's Catholic Church, 7600 N. Port Washington Rd., Fox Point. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery. FEERICK FUNERAL HOME 2025 East Capitol Dr. Shorewood 414-962-8383 www.feerickfuneralhome.com
