Melvin Bernstein Notice
Bernstein, Melvin Age 85, of Naples, Florida, passed away May 31, 2012, of congestive heart failure. He was born October 18, 1926 in Milwaukee, to Selma and I.H. Bernstein. He was a lifelong member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), having received his first license in 1941 as W9WZS. Years later, when he mastered code at 35 words per minute, he received an extra class license and dropped the "S" from his call, becoming W9WZ. A graduate of Shorewood High School, he became a radio technician in the Navy at the end of WWII. He joined Sigma Alpha Mu at Purdue University, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering. In 1950, he married Sharon Beckerman and went to work at Milbrew, his family's brewer's yeast products business, which subsequently became Amber Laboratories. After the company was sold to Universal Foods in 1983, Melvin continued working at his own companies, Larkspur and Biospur, eventually retiring in 2010. In 1990, they purchased a condo in Naples, Florida, moving to the Glenview, a retirement home, in 2008. They are parents of Mary (William) Pinkerson of Long Beach, California, Rabbis David (Leba) and Yaakov "James" (Rochel) of Spring Valley, NY, seventeen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Freida Bernstein and Carol Levin. Graveside services 3:30 PM Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Spring Hill Cemetery, 166 S. Hawley Ct., Milwaukee. Memorials to a .
