Ardra Prescott

Notice Condolences

Prescott, Ardra Of Whitehall, New York and Bayside, Wisconsin, Ardra Wavle Prescott, age 85, passed away peacefully at The Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, following a lengthy illness. Ardra was born on December 1, 1927, in Boston, MA, to children's author, Ardra Soule Wavle and Leon Wavle. She grew up in Hingham, MA, in the home that the family owned since 1723 and was located in the Lincoln National Register Historic District. As a young girl her happiest days were spent with her mother living during the summers in a 20 x 16 beach cottage on the dunes of Cape Cod overlooking the Atlantic Ocean near the Nauset Coast Guard Station. The home, built by family friend and naturalist writer, Henry Beston, was known as the Outermost House and lead to his literary account of living in the house for a year with no heat, lights or running water. She attended Old Derby Academy and was graduated from the New England Deaconess School of Nursing in Boston with her RN degree in 1949. Her career began at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, MA, where her love of nursing took her to Labor and Delivery and Surgical Nursing. Ardra or Ardie known to her friends had such a love for her patients and her times providing hospice care were some of her most satisfying. After relocating with the family in 1966 to Upper Arlington, OH, she again practiced nursing at Ohio State University, beginning in their ER department and finally working with the Eye, Ear and Nose Department. She co-authored with a number of physicians the textbook Nursing Care in the Eye, Ear Nose & Throat Disorders and specialized in the effects of Diabetes on the Retina. Once again the family relocated to Bayside, Wisconsin and she became part of the University of Wisconsin, Eye Institute as Head Nurse in the Ophthalmology Department. Along with her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Mortimer M. Prescott. Their life was full of travel and adventure, visiting 4 of the 7 continents. The highlight of their travel was spending time each year for 30 years on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Lanai. Their journeys took them not on the usual "tour route", but off the beaten path. Their idea of travel was to experience the local culture of people, places and foods. They visited the Pyramids and rode camels together in Egypt, were shipwrecked in the Mediterranean Sea and rescued by fishing boats. Visiting Paris and the Greek Islands always allowed them to soak up the flavor and essence of local life. Where ever they went they made lifelong friends. Mrs. Prescott is survived by her loving children, Martha Prescott Bascue, who she came to live with in August 2012, and husband Charles of Whitehall, NY, William Soule Prescott and wife Sari of Fox Point, WI, 6 grandchildren, Lauren Bascue Steves and husband, Christopher, Charles Bascue of Whitehall, NY Whitney Bascue and fiancé Matthew Burger of South Glens Falls, NY, Megan Prescott, Allison Prescott and partner Seth Wooll and Andrew Prescott of Fox Point, WI and great-grandson, Dominic Christopher Steves of Whitehall. One of Ardra's favorite Hawaiian saying was "A hui hou" Good bye, until we meet again. At Ardra's request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of Jillson Funeral Home, 46 Williams Street, Whitehall, NY. The family suggest memorials to the following organizations: National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
