Mary Jane Mitten Obituary
Jean and her husband Patrick (Paddy) Mitten immigrated as Irish citizens first to Toronto, Canada in 1959 then to Juneau, Alaska in 1963 where she remained until her passing.
Jean was a member of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) where she travelled extensively all over the world for the United Kingdom's Royal Navy. Jean also worked for many years at both the J-D Telephone Company and Alaska Electric Light & Power in Juneau. Her positions as both a J-D Telephone and an AEL&P representative suited her social and joyful nature. People meeting her family would often say----"Your mom is Jean Mitten, she's the AEL&P lady!" Jean often said that if you were in customer relations, you learned to say something nice to people or needed to be in another line of work. Jean maintained her proper Irish sensibility, but shared all her special qualities with family and friends. She loved travelling abroad, a traditional high tea, reading romance novels, as well as a party with music, laughter and dancing. One of her favorite days of the year was Boxing Day, where friends and family would join her in celebrating the day after Christmas.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Patrick (Paddy) Mitten of Dublin, Ireland. Parents Herbert and Margaret (Maggie) McConville, Newry, N. Ireland. Brothers David (Skiddley), Ivan and James McConville all of Newry, N. Ireland.
Jean is survived by her sister Elizabeth (Hugh) McAlister, of Cookstown, N. Ireland, sister-in-law's Margaret McConville, of Newry, N. Ireland, Catherine (Kitty) Durrad of Dublin, Ireland, Phyllis Lynch of Dublin, Ireland, daughters Margaret (Garney) Henley of Edmonton, Canada, Susan Mitten (Gordon Johnson) of Juneau, Alaska; Elisabeth (Lisa) Mitten (Lance Windous) of Denver, Colorado, son Shane Mitten of Juneau, Alaska, grandchildren Shawna Lynass, Robin Henley, Darby Windous, Cian Windous and great grandchildren Genevieve and Adrienne Lynass. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins all over Ireland, England, Scotland and Canada.
A service will be held on Friday, June 17th, 2016 at the Douglas Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. with a reception following at 3170 Nowell Avenue in Juneau, Alaska.

She was a charming and friendly woman who always had a smile for everybody. I remember her sitting at AEL&P and she would always greet me (and everyone else) warmly. My condolences to her family.

I enjoyed knowing Jean at church and around town. I guess she knew me from my childhood, although I remember her in my adulthood. Jean was witty and liked to smile. She was a good neighbor to my grandparents in the Glacier Valley School neighborhood. I'm thankful for the times we sang hymns and prayed together at Wildflower Court. It's a great joy to know she is resting with Jesus now in peace and without pain.

Jean was always friendly and seemed to know her clients after first visit. One of her daughters worked in my State department in the 70's. She will be missed by a lot of Juneauites. Condolences to all the family.

We lived in the same condo complex for a few years. Jean was always so sweet to us and two our two little girls. She was like a grandma to them giving them giving them special treats to eat :) Jean was a wonderful lady and will be miss.

Jean was one of the first people I got to know when my husband started working at AEL&P. She was warm and welcoming and always made me feel comfortable when I felt shy coming to work events. She was a wonderful woman. I was so sorry to hear of her passing when I got back to town this afternoon. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Such a lovely and kind woman. It was always a pleasure to see Jean and like many, I have fond memories of Jean from her days at AEL&P. I am saddened to hear of her passing. She made Juneau a better place and will be missed.

Jean will be missed by so many. We met her thru her daughter Susan who is a dear friend of mine. My daughter called her Grandma Mitten; which she loved. We have many fond memories of a woman we loved dearly. My heart goes out to her family; so very sorry for your loss.
