Yvonne Braithwaite Obituary
When we think of how best to describe this beautiful woman, the words courage, strength, and determination come to mind. Her list of injuries and illness over the past 20 years certainly would have taken down a lesser woman long ago. But she was a fighter right to the very end. Her mind could have gone on forever, but her physical body had no fight left. On September 21, 2018, Yvonne Braithwaite passed peacefully away.
The world became a little brighter on March 19, 1930 when Ruth Yvonne Ogden (please call me Yvonne, thank you.) came into this world in New Westminster, BC. Proud parents Ruth and Ronald Ogden cherished the arrival of their only child. Yvonne grew up and attended school in New Westminster, moving to Kamloops in her teens where she met and married her husband. The mid 70s brought significant change to her life and with that, new scenery was in order. She and her youngest son moved back to the coast, where she lived primarily until her death. She made a couple of moves over the years back to the Interior to be closer to her children, but always came back, as she loved the climate of the coast (Jai agrees with you, Mom).
Yvonne loved her summers at Shuswap Lake, where she proudly maintained a beautiful hand pulled weed free flower and vegetable garden. She was also an inspirational water skier; we fondly remember her effortless beach take off on a slalom ski. She had great rhythm, mad skills on the dance floor, and loved all types of music. (yes, even ours). There's a good chance that she (along with the other patients at Peace Arch Hospice) will have the memory of our rendition of Sweet Caroline stuck in her head for all eternity (Sorry about that). She loved her dogs and her grand dogs, too numerous to name, but in recent years Carter and Shumonee held a special place in her heart. She was a talented artist, and loved to paint, but we can all agree that she will be remembered best for her razor sharp wit.
Her greatest joy in life was having and raising her four boys (no doubt another reason that she was so strong - those first three really tested her resolve but fortunately the fourth one was a breeze). She was equally proud of the daughters she never had - her four lovely daughters-in-law. From them she became "Nonny" to ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished with all her heart.
Yvonne is survived by her son Dale (Chris), grand-children Levi, Lindsay and Josh, great grand-daughters Stevie and Jessa, son Barrie (Becky), grand-children Sarah, Krista (Mark) and Matthew (Danelle), great-grandchildren Lily and Sebastien, son Phil (Sherry), granddaughters Micaela (Tatsu) and Jenae (Devon), and great grandsons Keyan and Gavin and son Jai (Sandy), grandchildren Jaime (Andrew) and Taylor (Alexis), and great-granddaughters Jaidyn and Haven.
Our family wishes to thank all of her doctors over the years, especially Dr. Spangehl, Dr. Al-Toura and the caring nurses at Peace Arch Hospice who made her final week on this earth as comfortable as possible. Additionally, we want to thank the wonderful staff at the Residences at Morgan Crossing.
We love you Mom, and will miss you every day for the rest of our lives.
A private celebration will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BC Children's Hospital a place close to her heart for saving the life of her great-granddaughter Jaidyn McGinn or the BC Cancer agency.
