The youngest of three children, Harold was born on September 25, 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, to Lois and Gerald Chance. Harold graduated from Wichita North High School in 1939. He served in the South Pacific during WWII, and was honorably discharged in May 1946. Harold married Marjorie Westwood on October 4, 1946. Harold and Marjorie raised five children while simultaneously making their mark on the amusement ride industry. For his contributions to the amusement industry, Harold was inducted into the Halls of Fame for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, Outdoor Amusement Business Association, and the Showmen's League of America. He also originated the AREA Amusement Ride Safety Seminar in 1971 which has been continued by the Amusement Industry Manufacturers and Suppliers Association. What a legacy this man has! Wichita is very fortunate to have had a man of such stature in our community. I worked for many years at Red Cross with Mary Van Scyoc; we lived at South Lake Village at the same time too. She, too, has quite a name for herself. My heartfelt prayers go out to the family. God now has an angel who can bring a world of entertainment to heaven.

Dick, Mike and the entire Chance family,
On behalf of the Reithoffer family I would like to express our sorrow on your loss. Your dad/grandfather, an icon in the amusement business, will never be forgotten. Harold Chance changed the face of the carnival industry with rides that still dominate many fair and park midways today. He was also a man of integrity who was a pleasure to do business with. His word was his bond. A great many deals were made between your dad/grandfather and my father with a hand shake. I feel honored to have known such a fine man. I hope all the great memories you've shared together as a family will help all of you through your time of grief.

I first met Harold 50 years ago when I was only 7 years old. However, I knew I was meeting someone who loved the amusement business. In 1987 I bought a 3 ride package from his son Dick despite Harold saying "Baker won't buy anything from us, his father never did." What Harold did not know was the great respect & trust I had for him and his family.
Harold built one of America's best amusement ride companies. After having the pleasure of visiting with the Chance family on a few occasions in Wichita, I learned what a genius Harold was. He would invent & build miniture rides in his workshop and then build a working train right on Dick's property.
A family man of class and determination that will be dearly missed. Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Chance family.

Harold, may you enjoy Heaven and walking with our Lord as much as you did your business and playing golf with your friends at Rolling Hills.
I remember one day after golf when we were enjoying Happy Hour, Harold came in and wanted 4 husky guys to check out a new ride. Ken Scott, Tom Uthe, Eric Johnston and Mark Toben went and when they came back, they all looked like they had seen a ghost. The platform dropped out below them.

Nancy, I recall how glowingly you spoke of your father back in 1974 - about how he spoiled you and how you were the only one with a (working) Carousel Horse in the foyer of your home. You said many nice things about him, but that is the one that sticks in my mind the most. I always admired his industriousness and courage in the manufacturing arena, he was one of a kind.
My family's prayers are with yours in these days when hope is what we hunger for the most.
May your grief find some solace in knowing where he has gone, and may you find peace in knowing what a great example you were given in this life. An example from an amazing man. Wichita has lost a native son, a captain of industry that the whole world would have been proud to have in their town. Tim Chavez

Dear Marge and family,

We read of Harold's passing and want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Our life on Treasure Cay was so immensely enriched by the presence of Harold that he will always stay in our memory. He was of a most generous nature; kind and considerate allowing us the freedom to roam through his workshops borrowing whatever we needed and helping us fix things and to solve problems that were beyond our competence. He was amusing and always good company and his stories of the circus kept us enthralled and he always enjoyed the goodies our girls baked for him. We are all thankful to him for the great contribution he made to the Treasure Cay community. He will be sorely missed.
