NEIL MORAN Obituary

1941-2011 Within the first few seconds you met the man everyone knew as T. Max Graham, you laughed. And immediately afterwards, you liked him. He had that amazing power to become everyone's friend. And now we smile through our tears at the wonderful memories left by Neil Graham "T. Max" Moran, who died Thursday, Oct. 27, in a Kansas City area hospital, after a battle with cancer. He was 70. An Independence native, Neil was an actor who came to prominence in Kansas City's dinner theaters during the 1980s. He appeared in a series of hit comedies with Vicki Olson, Dennis Allen and others. Dennis Hennessy, co- owner of the New Theatre, recalls a time when Graham's name alone helped sell out shows. "Max was really one of a kind," Hennessey said. "In the good old days of Tiffany's Attic, he was a headliner. People would come just to see him." Moran had spent a dozen years on the west coast at the start of his career, and made his film debut in the biker film "Angel Unchained." He was proud of his role in David Lynch's cult classic "Eraserhead." In recent years, he played character roles in films shot in this area, including Ang Lee's "Ride with the Devil" and Kevin Wilmott's award- winning independent "The Only Good Indian." He also continued his work at theaters across the metro area, in comedy and drama. He earned critical praise for his lead roles in "Galileo" and "Translation," and appeared with longtime friend Loretta Swit in "Move Over Mrs. Markham." "His life was his art," says neighbor Karen McCoy. "Max was always preparing scripts, working on his next project. He was totally devoted to his craft." Moran was a member of Actors Equity and the Screen Actors Guild. He appeared in numerous TV series and commercials, and gave generously of his time for community projects. He was a regular reader and performer at Westport Presbyterian Church holiday presentations. He was part of the workout program at the St. Luke's Hospital Center for Health Enhancement for 10 years, joined the group's barbershop harmony mini- chorus -- then known as "Cardiac Carolers" -- and changed the name to "Cardio Jam." Survivors include daughter Rhonda Pearson, Centerview, MO; brother Robert D. Moran and wife, Louise, Independence, MO; niece Robyn Maune and husband, Bill, Blue Springs, MO; niece Jane Brooks and husband, Samuel, Grain Valley, MO; nephew Robert David Moran and wife, Susan, Independence; niece Margaret Cox, Independence, and numerous other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 am, Thursday, Nov. 3, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055; interment at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the chapel. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.speakschapel.com. Arrangements: Speaks Suburban Chapel, 816-373-3600. S

What a complete & total shock. I lived next door to Max for a number of years on Coleman Rd. I have been out of the area for a number of years & had not known of his passing. My condolences to all his family. The world has lost a true gem in Max. He was everything you could want in a neighbor & more. He did always make you laugh! I will miss him deeply and will always be grateful for the fabulous memories.

I grew up across the road from Neil in eastern Independence, Mo. We graduated from high school together, then went are seperate ways and didn't meet again for 30 years, yet when we came together again it was as if those years were only a few. He was the same warm, funny guy. we will miss him.
Rest in peace Max.

Rest in Peace Max. You will be greatly missed by all who had the honor to know you. Our street just hasn't been the same without you. I'm sure you and my dad are having a great laugh. He always enjoyed talking with you - a fellow Moran!

Thank you for being you, for always greeting me with a smile and that sweet deep voice, always having a kind word to say and taking the time to pet Pete dog and say hello to Bob. You were always a mystery to me in endearing and magical way. We miss you Max. Our little corner in the 'hood will never be the same without you. :(...

Max will forever be in my mind as a good friend and a consummate professional. What a incredible talent we have lost!

As a longtime sound engineer in Kansas City, I have spent many hours working and laughing along with Max. In fact, in 1983, Max was at the microphone for the very first commercial recording session I ever completed on my own. Even as I created the dreaded headphone feedback that went straight to his core, he was still good to me - Something not easy to do I'm certain!

Max was the only person that I ever knew that claimed he could read a 60 sec radio commercial in ONE breath!!! HE could do it! And he DID!

Memories of Max's infectious and wonderful laugh will always bring a smile to anyone that knew him.

What an awesome friend and talented person.

T. Max (Neil as I just learned) will be missed by all those in the entertainment industry in Kansas City. I had the pleasure of meeting Max approx. 20 yrs. ago through my daughter, Vicki Evans of Voices &. From that day forth, we were never strangers again; Max always recognized and acknowledged me when our paths crossed at the many movie industry / theatre events we both attended (FilmFest Kansas City, CinemaKC, etc.). His talent will be missed greatly, but mostly I will miss his larger than life presence; his wittiness, his booming laugh and his friendship to me, Vicki and my son Curtis. "Rest in Peace, MAX", we will miss you. Nadine Mummaw (Lake Tapawingo, MO)

Neil (Max) was a fine actor, a funny storyteller, a good friend to many. I met him in San Francisco when he was part of the Interplayers Theatre in North Beach. Later we ran into him in Los Angeles where he was following a film career. Later he found a good career doing theatre in Kansas City and when I went home to KC for Christmas, I would take my parents to whatever theatre he was working in. His sense of humor and deep enjoyment of friends kept him in our hearts--as he will be forever. May the angels take thee to thy rest, good friend! love, Edie McClurg

I first met Neil (Max) in San Francisco where he was a stage actor, then in Los Angeles when I moved there to start my acting career. Later, when I went home to Kansas City for Christmas, I found him to be the Kansas City Star of KC Theatre. We kept in touch and was so saddened to hear of his illness. I have a phone message from him on my answering machine and I will treasure it. I guess God needed a great character actor for his company in the heavens. May the angels take thee to thy rest. Much love, Edie
