James Tierney Obituary

James Patrick Tierney James "Jim" Patrick Tierney, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Kansas City, MO on April 30, 1927 to William and Ann (Schweiger) Tierney. He attended St. Francis Xavier grade school and Rockhurst High School in KCMO. He served in the Coast Guard in 1945 46. He graduated second in his class from Rockhurst College in 1948 where he was a member of Delta Epsilon Sigma. In 1948, he pursued post-graduate work at Oxford University and graduated Harvard Law School with an LL.B in 1951. In that same year, he returned to Kansas City and commenced a distinguished law career with Kemp, Koontz, Clagett and Norquist (known today as Lathrop Gage). In 1962, he met and married Catherine (Kitty) Dolan, the love of his life. Together they raised four children, traveled the world together and shared passions for gardening, music and art. Jim will be remembered as a wise and honest lawyer, whose illustrious legal career spanned five decades. He acted as managing partner for Lathrop Gage for a decade. A master of negotiation, he combined astute business acumen with a keen legal mind, serving as counsel for numerous multi-national mergers and acquisition transactions. He was a cherished and respected mentor to young lawyers, who looked to him for practical advice and guidance. Adamantly opposed to the death penalty, he took on several pro-bono cases defending death row inmates. Passionate about politics, he was a member of the original board of Governors of the United Democratic Association in 1960 and chaired the Kanas City Fair Housing Commission in 1968-69. More than anything, he loved engaging with others about the state of the world, particularly those who held views different from his own. Jim was an avid reader and lifelong learner whose hobbies included tennis, gardening, technology, cooking, sailing, travel, reading and, above all else, skiing. Born a flatlander, Jim was a mountain man in his soul. As a charter member of the Kansas City Ski Club, he would travel 24 hours by bus to Aspen just for the chance to ski for two days. Nothing brought him more joy than sharing his love of skiing with others, especially his wife, children and grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George, William and Thomas. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Kitty; his four children, Michael Edward Tierney, Patrick James Tierney, Ann Tierney Prochnow (Christopher Tyler Prochnow) and Katherine Tierney Blando (Phillip Joseph Blando); and his grandchildren, Abby and Matt Tierney, Jessica and Liam Tierney, Connor and Sophia Prochnow, and George and Katherine Blando. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 9th from 9 11 am at Visitation Church, 5141 Main St., Kansas City, MO with Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bishop Spencer Place Employee Fund, 4301 Madison Ave, KCMO 64111. The family would like to thank the exceptional caregivers of Bishop Spencer Place for providing loving, compassionate care to Jim. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.MuehlebachChapel.com.

Dear Tierney Family,

I came across this obituary yesterday. You don't know me, but my dad was at Bishop Spencer Place, for a month for rehab, last October. The first night we were there we met "Jim" at the dinner table. He told me I was beautiful...he melted my heart...I visited with him every single day I was there. He told me of his wife and family, where he went to school, church, etc. He was an absolute dear. I imagined him to be a great guy and his obituary proved what I guessed in the short time I got to visit with him. What a wonderful legacy he has left to you all. I just wanted to let you know, even in his final months, he brought joy to a complete stranger. I feel blessed to have been able to meet him! God bless you all. My prayers for you as you mourn his presence on earth, but know of his heavenly presence with you always!

Sorry for the recent loss of Jim. I was fortunate to sit next to Catherine on the flight to Phoenix today, and enjoyed the conversation of learning about their life of 56 years together. Prayers and healing wishes to Catherine and the family.

Kitty. Please accept my sincere sympathy on your loss of Jim. I have asked my brother, Father Jerome, a monk at Subiaco Abbey in Arkansas, to celebrate Mass for him, and to include him in the prayers and good works of the Benedictine monks there. God bless you and your family.

Kitty and Family,
Sue and I want to express to you our sincerest prayers and condolences on the passing of Jim, even though I know he's been having a number of problems.
Unfortunately, his Funeral is at the same time as Pat Wilkerson's Funeral and I am a Pallbearer at Pat's and, therefore, can't be at both of them.
Know that I remember Jim since I went to school with is twin brothers. He was a tremendous lawyer and leader that we'll all miss.
Sorry we can't be with you, but know that we offer our prayers.

Jim was my mentor and friend. He will always be remembered as a person who would lead the way with a smile and smart ideas. His ability to make you laugh in stressful times was wonderful. He will be missed.

I will never forget the hours I spent with Uncle Jim at my father's hospice bedside in 2008. He came every day. They were not only cousins but great friends. Such an incredibly kind man. Say hello to my Dad for me. With sympathy,

I never met anyone who knew Jim who did not consider him one of the finest people they ever met. He was gracious, kind and ethical. When you spent time with him you aspired to be a better person. Ann Mesle

Years ago I met Mr. Tierney when he happened to take the Metro to work (the boss needed the car). He was interested in everyone on the busmost worked at Hallmark or Assurantand wanted to know what we did, our hobbies, etc. When he told me that he played tennis every week, I was amazed and impressed. That night I told my husband that I wanted tennis lessons for my birthday (and Ive been playing ever since). It was always a joy to see himhe was a true gentleman with a quick wit and a very good heart. Im so very glad (and honored) to have met him.

Ann Tierney, I assume you are the darling, bright, outgoing little girl that I had the fortunate opportunity to teach many, many years ago at Loretto. You have always stuck in my mind as a girl who would be capable of doing anything you wished to do. I am very sorry to hear about your dad. After reading about him, I saw that he worked at Kemp, Koontz, Clagett, & Norquist. My uncle was Paul Koontz. I wish you and all of your family peace and comfort through this difficult time. My prayers are with you. The wonderful memories that you have made with your dad will last forever. Take care.

Jim always made me feel welcomed and like a good friend whenever we met. I will never forget his and Kitty's gracious hospitality especially when I was new to the group of diocesan attorneys. He was a terrific attorney but a better friend. May he rest in peace.
