1914 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
Catherine Elizabeth (Kitty) Browne Obituary
BROWNE Catherine Elizabeth (Kitty) Browne passed away January 15, 2016, two months shy of her 102nd birthday. A visitation will be held beginning at 10am and the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11am on Thursday, January 21, 2016 - both at St Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Kitty was born in 1914, in Manchester England to Edmund and Theresa McKeown. Along with her sister Tess, the family immigrated to the United States in 1925, and landed in Newark, New Jersey where she graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School. In 1939, she married Joseph A. Browne and then began a wonderful adventure in travel and family. In 1942, Joe's career with Trans World Airlines (TWA) brought them to Kansas City where they settled nicely in the Brookside neighborhood and Visitation parish. Kitty and Joe were blessed with children Patty, Tom and Jon and made many lifelong friends in the area. She especially enjoyed volunteering in the Rockhurst High School Mothers Club and being vibrant and active in her family life. Kitty became a United States Citizen in 1948. Joe's position as Director of Meteorology with TWA took them back East in 1970, and she enjoyed living in Garden City, NY and making many new friends. In 1989, Kitty returned to live in Prairie Village, Kansas and enjoyed her involvement with the Daughters of the British Empire (DBE), Ladies of Charity, and St. Ann Parish. Kitty was proud of her British heritage and her Catholic faith. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and keeping up with all the news - always responding to others with a well written note. In March of 2014, the entire family and many friends gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday (photo above is from that beautiful day). A grand time was had by all and the party continues to resonate as a wonderful reminder of a loving family and a life well lived. Kitty is pre-deceased by her parents, sister, and Joe, her husband of 36 years. She is survived by her daughter Patricia McGurren and husband Tom (Dallas, TX), son Tom Browne, PhD (Overland Park, KS), and son Jon Browne, MD and wife Angela (Leawood, KS). Kitty had seven grandchildren; to Patricia: Catherine Applegate and husband Manly (Sewickley, PA), Christine Smith and husband Jeff (Lancaster, PA), Tom McGurren, Jr and wife Sarah (Norwalk, CT); to Tom: Peter Browne and wife Julie (Kansas City, MO), Christopher Browne and wife Becky (Lenexa, KS); to Jon: Ryan Browne and wife Britteny (Dallas, TX), and Spencer Browne and wife Alexandra (Dallas, TX). Kitty was blessed with fourteen great- grandchildren; to Christine: Matthew and Kathleen Smith; to Tom Jr: Emmett and Avery McGurren; to Peter: Maureen, Joseph and Jack Browne; to Christopher: Brett and Reese Browne; to Ryan: Marlo, Victoria and Britten Browne; to Spencer: Paul and Alexander Browne. The family thanks the team from Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care (Jamie, Gail, Carol and Marcy) for their compassionate support, the dedicated staff at The Forum of Overland Park where Kitty has lived for the last four years, and the Eucharistic Ministry Team from Cure of Ars Catholic Church who visited Kitty at the Forum weekly. Family requests no flowers and suggests any honorariums be directed to the Rockhurst High School Mothers Club in honor of her sons and grandsons (rockhursths.edu), or Kansas City Hospice Palliative Care (kchospice.org), or The Forum of Overland Park.
