It was good to remember my cousin, Hal Jr. today and read the story of his life. My brother, his cousin, Billy Bob Souther, loved to remodel "homes and churches." He is in heaven as well. Billy's son, William Souther Shannon, loves to restore cars. Guess the Souther genes appear in various times and places. Love to Dennie and the family. Joy Souther Cullen

Hal Jr. was one of two boy cousins . . . Bobby Moyer, son of our Aunt Bernice Souther Moyer Kermode, who I proably saw only a couple of times in my life. One summer he lived with my family in Dallas, Texas. Then there was Hal Jr. who I first saw when he was born to Harold and Betty Souther. My best meories of Hal are those as adults . . . a visit to their home in Florida ??? and then a wedding in Texas and that wonderful supper together with Dennie and Bob at Margiannos in Dallas. I'm glad for this reminder today of a sweet man, my cousin.

Please accept this very belated codolence on your lose of Hal.
I knew Hal as a freshman at Baylor Univiersity in the 1963-64 year. He lived a few doors down from me in the dormitory. We became close friends. The obit and the postings were comforting to read. They reinforce that he was the Hal I knew. We were both car guys. He used to talk incessantly about his pre-WWII Ford and all he did to bring it back to life. I saw Hal twice after that freshman year. Once he drove down with a college friend, maybe about 1966. And another time he came down when his sister was just starting Baylor, visiting for maybe a day.
Best regards to all of you.

Hal Jr. was my cousin. I remember when he was born. I was just 4. His dad, Harold Souther Sr., was "my dad" for many years after his older brother, Billy Souther, died. My children and I were sharing memories last night of the times they met Hal and Dennie. We were home on furlough from SE Asia - that making visits through the years very few. I do know that Hal made a visit to Southwestern Seminary on the day our son graduated. As he walked down the aisle of the chapel, I thought it was my dad coming down. That's how much Hal looked like dad. My last memory of being with Hal and Dennie was several years ago when we met for dinner at Margianno's in Dallas. I don't know if his children's wedding was before or after - but the dates don't matter - just the memories. So we Cullen-Southers are grieving the loss with Dennie and the children. There's a great reunion in heaven one of these days.

Remembering Hal
He was a delightful, caring, life loving man. We are blessed with so many happy memories of Hal. He was a bright light in the world. His presence always came with a hug and a big infusion of love and caring most often delivered in a vintage Cutlass convertible. That presence will be greatly missed.
One evening he told a group of close friends that, when he died, he wanted us to sit him on his Harley and head him down the MOPAC freeway . We all laughed. Little did we know back then that Alzheimers would take him away from his family years before he died. During his last trip to Austin it was clear that he had difficulty remembering some things, and I was so glad that Dennie brought him to Austin so that we could see him one more time before he became unable to know us. It was a gift to be with him.
My heart is sad for Dennie, Richie and Nicole Souther, Carolann and Steve Lewis and the beautiful grandchildren Lilly, Abby, Austin, Liam and Amelia Lewis, and Teagen Lewis, and Colin, and Quinn Souther whom he loved so dearly. I love you all and know the pain of loss
is hard to bear.
You are all in my prayers as you grieve your beloved grandfather, father and dear former spouse and friend. i grieve with you and ask that God wrap you in his arms and bless you
with peace and assurance in this time of loss.

I hold many happy memories of times with Hal in high school and in college. Those memories will always be mine....and hope to meet with Hal again some day in a better place. His life sounds so full and happy. God's blessings to Dennie and his children.
