James Daniel Colyer, DDS, 89, drove his Foretravel motorhome through Heaven's Gate (blaring Roger Miller's King of the Road) where he awaits Lorene, his bride of 67 years. Jim passed away surrounded by his family at Santa Marta in Olathe, Kan., on February 1, 2015. Jim and Lorene had four children and 12 grandchildren, Linda (and Rodney) King (Dennis, Jonn, Annette, Michael) of Gilbert, Ariz., Dr. Jim (and Toni) Colyer (James, Kelli, Chris, Kami) of Paradise Valley Ariz., Diane Colyer (Bria) of Aurora Colo., and Lt. Governor Jeff (and Ruth) Colyer, MD (Alexandra, Serena, Dominique) of Overland Park. They have 12 1/2 great grandchildren. Dad and son, Jim II are putting on Heaven's 3rd green. Jim was born in Bogue, Kan., to John Nathan and Leona Irene (Trexler) Colyer and raised by his aunt and uncle, Irene and Big Jim Colyer. The epitome of the Greatest Generation, Jim graduated from Hays High School in 1943. One of the few Navy corpsman to survive the invasion of Peleliu, he was wounded, treated himself, and returned the next day. He practiced dentistry in Hays from 1955-85 where he enjoyed boating at Cedar Bluff, Lions Club, his kids' sports, St. Joseph's Church, and hunting with his beloved dog, Sniffer. Jim romanced Lorene at her father's Sweet Shop in Hays where they married in 1947. In 1985 they retired to Scottsdale, Ariz. Jim, Lorene, and poodle, Cookie drove their motorhome 1000s of miles showing America to their grandkids shouting "Quack, Quack you're a duck" under every overpass, later settling in Olathe. Jim is most remembered for his generosity, love of family, courage, community involvement, sense of adventure, distaste for traffic lights, practical jokes, and deepest devotion to his wife.
