Jim Prather Obituary
Jim Prather Jan. 7, 1939 - Nov. 5, 2018 James Windsor Prather was born January 7, 1939, in North Kansas City, Missouri, to John Baruch (J.B.) and Viola Ruth Prather. James "Jim" and his older sister Martha enjoyed growing up on Prather Hill, and playing on the 80 acre farm that their Great Grandfather Baruch Prather purchased in 1831 (a short distance east of Avondale and North Kansas City, Missouri). Jim attended Cooley Elementary School and North Kansas City High School, and graduated from William Jewell College in 1961, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He honorably served on active duty in the United States Air Force in 1962. He worked for over 30 years in Agricultural Sales/Purchasing for Farmland Industries, before branching off to start WilFarm, LLC with his respected colleagues and friends in the Ag-Chemical business, from which he retired. Jim attended Avondale United Methodist Church through his youth as his great grandparents were charter members. It was there that he met the love of his life, Patsy Mathew Prather, and on June 20, 1964, they were united in marriage. He enjoyed many years as an active member in the Avondale UMC congregation, singing in the choir, serving and teaching in his Sunday School class, and serving in his role on the pastor/parish committee. Jim loved to laugh, and to help others see the humor in any situation. He had a lovely baritone singing voice, and performed several solos at church. His hobbies include golfing, gardening and landscaping, fishing and boating at Tablerock lake, doting on his wife, sister, daughters, and granddaughters, and attending several "breakfast clubs" with friends from high school, Sunday School, and his Corner Cafe group. He will live on through the memories of all who knew him! Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Louise Mathew Prather, survived by his sister, Martha Prather Moore (Jim), two daughters, Suzanne Janette Prather Kirk (Steven), Rebecca Jane Prather Ballou (Trent), and two granddaughters, Meredith Louise and Caroline Jane Ballou. A celebration of life service in his honor will take place at 2pm on Sun., Nov. 18, Avondale United Methodist Church, 3101 NE Winn Road, Kansas City, Missouri, with a visitation at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Avondale UMC.
