1928 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
SOPHIA MARY MYERS Sophia Mary Myers, 89 passed away peacefully on March 21, 2018 at North Kansas City Hospital. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. To 11:00 A.M. at McGilley Funeral Home, 12301 State Line Rd., Kansas City, MO on Tuesday, March 27 followed by a burial at Forest Hill Cemetery, 6901 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any donations be sent to The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, CO/CDS , 4525 Oak St. Kansas City, MO. 64111 Sophia was born in Coffeyville, Kansas on October 25, 1928 to immigrant parents who came from Greece. She and her family later moved to Kansas City. Sophia was a member of The Kansas City Writers Group, The Municipal Arts Council of Prairie Village, and the Kansas City Artists Coalition. She authored numerous fictional books, short stories and poems. She served as art editor, writer, and artist for Red Herring, a mystery magazine, and for Potpourri, a literary magazine, for which she also served as art editor and president. She was a past president of The National League of American Pen Women. Sophia was known for her fresco paintings. Her re-creation of Pompeii in her basement at her home in Prairie Village was featured in Artists' Magazine and in Renovation Style. The Pompeii Room was replete with frescoes, painted murals, and mosaics. It was accomplished with the assistance of two art students from the Kansas City Art Institute. Sophia also volunteered at her grand children's elementary schools to encourage art appreciation in young children. She is survived by her brother, Michael Mardikes (Myrt); sons George (Crystal) and Nick (Patty) Vedros, and grandchildren Paul, Nicholas, and Meryl Vedros. Additionally, she leaves her step-daughters, Charlotte (John) O'Keefe, Lynn (John) Ross, Barbara (Steve) Hardwick, and Mary (Randy) Harwerth, nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Other surviving members are her nephews, niece, and five great-nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph Myers and her ex-husband, Alexander Vedros. Sophia loved art, literature, history and books. She spent her time reading, painting and writing. With creativity and affection, she made wonderful costumes for all her grandchildren.
