MAKENNA BARTEL-HEANEY Obituary

HEANEY Makenna Rose Bartel-Heaney, formerly of Leawood, residing with her husband in Overland Park, passed peacefully in the early evening of April 22, 2013, at her home with loved ones surrounding her after a two-year battle with cancer. Makenna was born Oct. 19, 1984, and so began a lifelong passion for the arts, beginning at Nativity Parish and leading her to graduate from The University of Kansas Metalsmithing Program within the School of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, Makenna successfully started her own Jewelry Design and Fabrication business. Makenna's business provided her the opportunity to explore another passion, travel, as she was accepted to renowned art shows across the USA. She also displayed her talent in local galleries within the Kansas City area. Makenna is survived by her husband, James D. Heaney, Jr.; parents, Cindy and Dave Bartel; sister, Devon Bartel: and forever-faithful dachshund, Lexi. A private "green" burial will be held Wednesday, April 24, at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family welcomes you to an open house at the home of Dave and Cindy (12204 Reinhardt Ln., Leawood) to express your condolences from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 24. A celebration of Makenna's life will be held on a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent in Makenna's name to: KU Endowment, PO Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044-0928. Per Makenna's wishes, the funds donated, along with her own contributions, will fund a metalsmithing scholarship in her name to a worthy student in order to continue her legacy and love of the arts.

I am so sorry for your loss. I received a necklace and ring for Mother's Day a few years ago made by Makenna. They are beautiful and I love them. I was looking forward to her return this year to the Laumeier Art Fair in St. Louis.

I'm so sorry to hear of Makenna's passing. I was trying to find another wonderful piece of her jewelry for a friend of mine. I will think of her beautiful smile each time I wear the fantastic turquoise ring she made. I purchased it @ the Quivera holiday mart in 2010.

We so enjoyed having Makenna a part of our Lake Quivira Holiday Bazaar in November of 2012. Her art work was lovely. As we spoke with her, we could tell what a lovely lady she was.

I had the pleasure of working with Makenna and JD as they moved into the farmhouse I represent for my boss. Makenna was always a joy to talk to and would feel so bad if she had to call with work that needed to be done. I remember coming out to visit with her on a maintenance call and begging Lex to like me and Makenna just laughed and laughed as Lex would have nothing to do with me. She was a wonderful person and I am so very blessed and lucky to have known her, even for a brief period of time. My heart goes to her family, especially JD for I know they truly loved each other deeply. We are all better people for having known Makenna and blessed she will be an angel to watch over us.

Makenna, I only knew you briefly, when I returned as a nearly-forty non-trad to finish my metals degree. I was blown away by your talent, passion, skill, and creativity, your friendliness and that amazing smile, which could light up a city block. Thank you for your humor, your kindness, and most of all, your art.

My heart goes out to James and the rest of Makenna's family. Makenna was an amazing person. I asked her to help me with my wedding band, and even though she didn't even know me, she bought and personalized the ring for me. Then she gave it me as a wedding present. This just goes to show how kind and endearing of a person she was.

My deepest sympathy to Makenna's Family at this very sad time. I met her a few years ago at an Art Fair. Makenna was a joy to talk to and her jewlery was magnificent. I will treasure the pieces I have and know that God has a wonderful Angel now in Heaven with him. May she rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband, parents, and sister.

I met Mackenna through my son at an art show - he, too, was artist there. He and his wife bought me some of Mackenna's jewelry, which I love. She was a lovely young woman and I am so sorry for your loss. Nancy Shelley Tharp

She is forever loved and remembered. There is much admiration with how she held her head high and handled life challenges with such grace and beauty. She was a dear friend the moment we met in orientation for college to present. Words cannot describe how much I will miss her laugh, smile and voice, but am relieved knowing she is resting in peace, no longer suffering and yet another angel watching over me. My "Big Mak" will always be in my heart.

We will look toward the Heavens and see a very bright star and know that Makenna is smiling on us.

It is so unfortunate I meet the most amazing individuals only after a serious life limiting illness has been diagnosed. Makenna was truly an amazing young lady. It was a true honor to have met Makenna & her entire family and care for her in her final days. I knew from the start the moment I walked into Makenna's room, seeing Lexi sitting on the bed barking at me we would be a great team as we both were dachshund moms and I knew exactly how to get in good with Lexi! I looked forward to every visit with Makenna and will hold a special place in my heart for her. May you be at peace knowing she is looking over all who loved her. She will not be forgotten.....Rest in Paradise Makenna!

I did not know Makenna personally, she is a friend of my sons. I know that every picture of her I saw with her in it, there was a beautiful smile and that her friends love her and will miss her dearly.
