Longtime Lexington florist John Heafey Howard passed away peacefully on Monday, July 9, 2018 at the age of 90. Married to the late Ann Allender Howard for 53 years, he was the father of seven children, Liz Doyle, Noreen Flora (deceased), John H. Howard Jr. (deceased), Katie Banks (Glen), Maggie Walsh (Charles), Bill Howard (Maria) and Tom Howard and he had nine grandchildren. He graduated from Campion Boarding School in Prairie du Chien, WS and he attended the University of Kentucky. John was an active charter member of the Cathedral of Christ the King, past president of the Kentucky Florist Association, past president of the Fayette Lions Club and he participated in many other fundraising and civic events. John loved people and he liked to laugh big. He especially loved to make people laugh big along with him and he had a huge heart for people in need. The family sends its heartfelt thank-you to all of the many caregivers, friends and supporters through his latest years of illness. In spite of a failing mind, his positive spirit and love for people shined through to the people who cared for him. Special thanks to the great caregivers at Sayre Christian Unit 1 and the VA Hospice Community Care Center, and private caregivers and friends Connie Sayeg, Ed Combs, Matt, and Millie Girard. A funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Lexington at 11am on Friday, July 13. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, July 12 at Clark Legacy Center in Brannon Crossing, Nicholasville. Former co-owner of Howard and Heafey Florist, John was known to say that he wanted the following statement in his obituary: "In lieu of donations to , please send flowers to someone you love."
