You and my son Jerry are on my mind today! Jerry's son is looking at going into the US Air Force. I know Jerry would have understood that he wishes to serve as his dad. Not a day goes by that I do not think of you and Jerry. I visit his grave as often as I can and think of all the young lives lost on the battlefield.
God bless you and your family and for the your bravery!

The last time I saw Joey was his last trip home. He and my grandson Bryan Adkins. Joey's stepfather came to see me. Our last words to each other were "Even tho your Mom and Bryan are now divorced you will always be my grand son and I love you" He answered " and I love you and you will always be my Granny Helen.I will see you when I get home again."
He was very special we laughed a lot.Joey loved his little brother Chase so much.

Basic training together, where we shared the duty of Platoon Guide. Combat Medic training where we shared moments amongst friends quite often; River walk laughs and nights at La Quinta!! And our paths continued to Ft Hood, TX where you introduced me to your Girlfriend and family. I still can't believe it. I love you, my battle buddy, my good friend. To the many times you allowed me to share of your life... Thank you so much Joseph H. Cantrell IV, always remembered and never forgotten. I glance down every day at that bracelet, place my hand over it, and share a memory with you my brother. I miss you so much.

I would like to pay my respects to a young man that I served with in 2-8 CAV in Ft. Hood TX. When CPL Cantrell arrived at Ft. Hood I was his Platoon Sgt and at the time he was a young soldier right out of basic training and AIT. From the time I met then PFC Cantrell I could tell that he was on his way to becoming an outstanding soldier even at his young age. He was motivated, disciplined and wanted to get better at everything he did. He also had a great attitude and sense of humor. I am proud to say I knew Joey and that for a small part of his life I was in it. My prayers and toughts are with his family. I miss CPL Cantrell and the medics of 2-8 CAV, and though it sounds strange, I always assume that I will link back up with soldiers I served with somewhere, sometime. I expect to see Joey come around the corner with that lopsided smile of his and talk about old Army times. God bless to his family and friends and know that I will never forget CPL Joseph Cantrell, Combat Medic, 2-8 Cavalry Bn.

You know Joey was the man every girl wanted and every man wanted to be in school. He never let it go to his head. And it didn't matter who you were what background you came from what group you can around with I never knew Joey to discriminate/look down on anyone. He gave EVERYONE a chance to be his friend.

And for that Joey I thank you. I thank you for everything you did in your life. Even though your life was taken from you way to soon the impact you had on me and many others that I know will last forever. We love and miss you very much joey.

Dear Son,
Two years have passed, and the sadness I feel today is just as great as the day I first heard the news that you were killed by an IED in Taji, Iraq. Words cannot describe the pain I felt on that day. In that moment, it was only by the Grace of God that I was able to take my next breath; and the same is true today.
I was blessed beyond measure the day you were born. I was blessed to have been there while you were growing up, and to have had an influence on your life. I am blessed with 23 years of memories of our lives together. I carry those memories with me.
Bub, although I know that we will meet again in Heaven, still I miss you more and more every day. Thoughts of you are will me always. I am proud of you.
Love, Dad.

Hello, my name is also Joey Cantrell. I was born Joseph D. Cantrell. I am a veteran of both the US Air Force and the US Army. My family originates from Kentucky and West Virginia. I happened across Joey's demise while googling my own name as I was a range rat with NASA. I have actually had Joey's picture as my screen saver for months, both at home at at work. I never knew Joey, but I feel an extreme connection. Joey, you will always be in my prayers. Although I live in Tampa, FL, I knew Joey well. The last time I talked to him was when my niece, LaShea, met us at the Louisville airport. Joey was flying in from Texas to surprise his mom and I was arriving in KY to visit my family. We just happened to be flying into the same airport within an hour of each other. It wasn't planned. During the entire ride from Louisville to Ashland, Joey rode in the back seat, but he was leaning up between the front seats talking to us about everything he was doing in the Army. We kept asking him questions and he kept giving us long, interesting answers. I could really tell he enjoyed what he was doing. While he was visiting his mom and brother and other family members that weekend, he stopped over one evening to say hello to us and to watch tv for a while. When he had to leave, I remember firmly shaking hands and giving him a pat on the back and saying, "I look forward to seeing you again soon, Joey." In my office high on a shelf, I have a framed picture of Joey in uniform - the same one that is shown in this guest book over to the right. On one side of his picture I have the American Flag. On the the other side I placed a Cross. Whenever I need inspiration or need extra energy to complete a project or to work a little longer or sometimes just to reflect on the life of a true American hero, I look at Joey's picture. That picture will ALWAYS stay in my house and I will ALWAYS remember him. He inspires me and I am so proud to have known him. His family remains in my thoughts and prayers.

Someone once wrote, "Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they ever made a difference. The American Soldier doesn't have that problem."

God Bless Joey Cantrell.

Joey,
Well today has been a year since you were taken from us, it has been a hard year for the family and for your friends, I speak to alot of people that knew you in some way or the other and it stands true how special you were. You touched so many lives in the short time that you were here, there is not a day that has went by that in some way or the other the precious memories of you dont cross my mind I wouldn't trade those for anything.
I want you to know that since you have been gone there is now a picture of you posted at the entry at Fairview High School it has your name and tells some about you and it has the date 4-4-07 on it. There is now a sign on Main Street that has your name on it the sign says that this road is dedicated to the memory of Cpl. Joey Cantrell. Thats pretty cool that you even have a road dedicated to you. You were only with us a short while but that picture in that school and that sign will let generations to come know who you are and the sacrifices that you made for each person that sees that sign. I dont ever want anybody to forget that you laid down your life for them.
I can only imagine as time goes on and your little brother Chase grows up how he too will help to ensure that you will always be with us, as Chase grows up and goes to Fairview what a great feeling he will have to pass your picture in that hall everyday and to go to that school that now sets on a road that is dedicated to you what a great sense of pride that little boy will have. I looked at your pics recently and I cant tell you how bad you are missed there are no words for it.
I spend alot of time doing research on the internet about you and still find things that make you still seem that you are with us, I read your My Space about every other day and search articles about you and I always find new things which is so great it just helps to know that other people are out there that know how special you are.
I will always keep you close to my heart and in my prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joseph, but he is my hero. If you would like

I don't know how I haven't ran across this Guestbook before. It just broke my heart all over again. Joey and I spent many, many years together (almost 7, I believe), and this loss has tore me apart. I miss him so much and it's still so incredibly hard to believe. I became part of his family, and now it's hard to even be around. (I miss and Love you all)
I know that I speak for a lot of people when I say THANK YOU for all of the comments! Joey was amazing and it is an honor to have known him as long as I did. Joe, Sondra, Ronn, and the entire family: you are always in my thoughts and prayers. I was so lucky to have met that boy!

Joey,
I can't even describe the feeling that exists inside me. "Empty" is the closest I can come. I miss you so much and I pray everyday that I'll wake up from this nightmare. You are my best friend and we have shared so much together. Memories and pictures are so precious to me now. I will never forget anything about you..and there's not a second that goes by that you're not in my thoughts. You truly are one of a kind; an American Hero. Can't wait to see you again Habibi! I love you.
