Richard Floyd Obituary
FLOYD Richard D., III, M.D., 90, husband of the late Mary Batts Floyd for 60 years, died on Aug. 8, 2018. Born in Oakland, KY June 6, 1928 the son of the late Richard D. II and Christine Thomas Floyd; brother of the late Marion T. Floyd and his late wife, Rosalie Floyd; and uncle of the late Andrew Floyd. Dr. Floyd was a general and thoracic surgeon at the Lexington Clinic for 31 years, retiring in 1990. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Kentucky, 1949, and M.D. degree from Yale University School of Medicine, 1952. He was board certified in general and thoracic surgery after completing residency training at Duke University Medical Center, 1960. He served two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, 1953-1955. While at the Lexington Clinic he served as President of the Board for several years. During his retirement, he was a member of the Lexington Clinic Foundation Board. From 1982-1990, he was a Director of the American Board of Surgery. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, Southern Surgical Association, and other medical and surgical societies. He received an honorary degree from Transylvania University where he was a member of the Board of Trustees for over 40 years. He was a member of the Lexington Rotary Club since 1960, serving as president in 1995. As a member of Central Christian Church, he was the past chairman of both the Board of Elders and Administrative Board. Survivors are one son, Richard D. Floyd, IV, M.D. (Julie), Lexington, KY; three daughters, Lynn (Robert M.D.) Bertram, Salisbury, NC, Jane (Edward D.M.D.) Tipton, Lexington, KY, and Lee (Scott) Allen, Roswell, GA; twelve grandchildren, Chris, Kelsey, and Craig Floyd; Whitney (Jeff) Thweatt, Mary Dudley (John) Tramazzo, Will (Lauren) Bertram, and Sarah Bertram; Alyson (Noah) Wilson and Drew Tipton; and Ben, Andy (Anna Lauren), and Sam (Brennan) Allen; great-grandchildren, Robbie and Mary Grace Tramazzo and Luke Allen; nieces, Ellen Sutherland, Donna Carrier, and Glenna Wilson; and his friend and companion later in life Peggy Mooney. Visitation will be on Fri., Aug. 10, 2018, 4 PM to 7 PM, Milward-Southland. Funeral service will be on Sat., Aug. 11, 2018, 10:30 AM, Central Christian Church. Private Interment will be at the Lexington Cemetery.
