1931 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
POWELL Robert "Bob" DePauw Jr., of Lexington, born August 4th, 1931, passed away by his family's side on June 9th, 2018. Born in Louisville to Robert DePauw Powell Sr. and Ruth Beth Coghill Powell, Bob spent his early years in Louisville, Frankfort, and Carrollton before returning to Louisville to attend Kentucky Military Institute. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Ft. Worth Texas and returned to the Bluegrass to attend college at the University of Kentucky before joining the Navy. Bob served aboard the U.S.S. Salisbury Sound in the Korean War where he fueled and prepped aircraft. Bob's love of planes extended into a career and hobby. Bob worked for Delta Airlines where he could be found greeting guests and handing out tickets, or on the tarmac guiding planes in for their landing. He worked at Bluegrass Field in Lexington, as well as Standiford Field in Louisville and Amon Carter Field in Ft. Worth. Bob retired from the company after 26 years in 1982. Bob's fascination with aeronautics lasted until his death. He was a member of the American Aviation Historical Society. His favorite free time activities, when not reading up on WWI aviation, was to drive to bookstores and look for more material. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Chiles Powell, as well as two daughters, Janice Gail Long of Kerrville, Texas, and Kymberlie Lynne Herron (Darrell) of Woodford County. He is also survived by grandchildren Julie and Jenny Gawlik of Ft. Pierce, Florida, John (Jackie) Gawlik of Pearville, Texas, and Bethany Lynne Herron of Woodford County, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Earl Powell of Florida. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Baptist Health and Bluegrass Care Navigators. Visitation and funeral arrangements have been set for 10:30am and noon, respectively, on Thursday, June 14th at Kerr Brothers on Main Street in Lexington.
