I discovered your artwork in the Art Gallery in Kinston. The more I looked at the paintings, the more memories I had. I know all too well the scenes in some of his artwork. I did purchase 2 of your paintings as a birthday present for my sisters. There is a giant Mural in Snow Hill on the side of the old Post office. You will be missed. Thanks for putting on canvas some of the memories of growing up in LaGrange, NC.

What a nice person he was. I first met Jurden and his wife Tina at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in the 70's. I remember early on asking him to hit a bass note for me because I had heard that he had some singing background. He humored me and I thought the walls shook. I was a teenager at the time. He left an impression on me that always made me smile inside when I thought of him. I wish that I had stopped in and seen him more over the years. I did see him at the New Bern Bank of the Arts a fews back as I recall and told him that I'd like to have one of his prints. And he said "How about an original?". To this day I haven't purchased one but I will if I get the chance. The world is lesser without him. But we can take comfort knowing that he sleeps, awaiting the resurrection. Peggy, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. I hope to see you again soon.

I got to know Chic during my days/years at Howell's. He was not just a great artist but a great person. I loved seeing his paintings throughout town when I would go in to medical offices. And I ALWAYS knew they were his before I even went to look at the signature! Not having any painting talent myself, I used to watch him paint the murals and was just amazed at how natural and easy it was for him to bring a wall or picture to life. Prayers for strength, peace and comfort during this time. He will live on through his paintings. And I imagine he can paint the prettiest scene ever now that he is able to see Heaven's glories.

Chick was a dear friend and neighbor of mine plus I worked with him at Howells Center. I saw him less than two weeks ago at Lenoir Memorial. He was unable to talk but with that sparkle in his eyes, he understood everything that I was saying. There aren't very many people in LaGrange that doesnt have a picture in their home that Chick didn't paint. For that reason he will live on in the lives of many of us although he will be truely missed. To the family of this great man I would like for you to know that you have my deepest sympathy, and you will be in my prayers during this your hour of sorrow.

I meet Chick Wooten around 2001. I’ve seen prints of his art in homes through-out N.C. I asked myself who is this talented individual. Soon to discovered that he was in his early 70’s at that time and lived right down the road from me in LaGrange NC on Easy Street. So I soon paid him a visit and I listened to over a hundred-fifty old tales, poems, and songs that summer. He shared with me his art/painting style secrets and would ask me to do administrated tasks for him, like take pictures of his original painting and send application’s to the library of congress for copyrights for over 30 of his creations. He would always ask me what did I charge him and I was so privileged to be in is presents that I would say nothing at all, just keep sharing the wisdom. He would then look around studio and pull out an original painting and say thank you, but here, take this one it yours. I now own 10 Chick Wooten originals, I purchased seven cause I felt bad that he would just say here take this for a few hours of work on my laptop computer. But I also was so impressed with his work, that I phoned the 2001/2002 NCCU Foundation Chairperson, and asked if I could trade out a couple of my own original art entries that I submitted in their Art Gala, and replace them with two of Chick’s creations.. I forwarded a digital image via email, and the Chairperson loved them and agreed to allow Chick’s work to be displayed at the North Carolina Museum of Arts during the 2002 NCCU Foundation Art Gala. His work was on display that evening with African American Masters like Jacob Lawrence, Romeare Bearden, Joshua Johnson, Archibald Motley and Henry Tanner. My prayers and sorrow goes out to the Wooten family and I shared this info to say that Chick will be missed by all.

Chick was an unique person with an ability to bring life to paintings. He has painted many pictures of members of my family and me. Prayers are lifted up to Chick's family and may God wrap His loving arms around each of you. I am so thankful that I have Chick's book to pass down to my son. Peggy, haven't seen you in years, but know my heart is with you during this sad time.

My name is Tanna Hines Torcaso and my grandparents were Marvin and Suebelle Pelletier. They owned the store by Rouse's Chapel Church. Mr. Chick painted 4 portriats of my father, Joe HInes in the 70's and 1 of my mother Marjorie Hines. Last year, I visited with him and comissioned him to paint me two pictures of the store that my grandparents owned. I went and picked him up and he and I went to the location, made pictures and he painted 2 pictures for me. He completed them on 3/10/2010. He did such a great job as he knew my family, the location, the scenery and buildings. When I picked up the paintings, I started crying because they looked just like they were when i was a young girl. These pictures will be passed onto my son as he remembered some of the buildings, also. I am 57 now and he gave me one of his books and signed it. I will always remember him as he welcomed me into his home, shared some of his works with me and talked about the past. He will be truly missed as an artist, and a wonderful person with such great talent. Tanna Hines Torcaso
