Robert Milton Anderson Obituary

Robert Milton Anderson, born November 10, 1942 in Norman Oklahoma to Pauline Praske and Robert M. Anderson. Bob, an expert in the field of ocean mapping, was attending the annual meeting of the General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean (GEBCO) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, when he died of a heart attack on November 4, 2019 at age 76. Proceeded in death by his young son Wade Robert Anderson and his sister Aida Todd. Survived by his wife of 53 years Ramona, daughters Christina Ann and Tina Marie, 9 grandchildren including Shawn and Zachary of whom he was guardian and 2 great granddaughters. A celebration of life will be held at Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nels Nelson Rd NW Bremerton on December 7th at 2 pm.

With a background in mathematics, Bob began his professional career at the US Navy Electronics Laboratory (NEL) in the early 1960's specializing in scientific exploration of the Arctic Ocean Basin from submarines under the ice. Bob and his two colleagues at NEL, Rod McLennan and Bob Vashon, developed what became known as APEX (Arctic Pulse Experimental) sonar which revolutionized under-ice submarine operations. Although technically retired, Bob was still active championing the global acquisition of seafloor mapping data, serving as mentor of the younger generation, and working on numerous outreach projects with the goal of showing the need for mapping the world oceans for the benefit of mankind.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Bob Anderson Memorial Fund at the Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church (mailing address PO Box 750 Silverdale WA 98315) or to the UNH Foundation Bob Anderson GEBCO Scholarship fund (UNH Foundation 9 Edgewood Road Durham, NH 03824 or on line at click on "other funds". Make a note that your gift is for the Bob Anderson GEBCO Scholarship).
