George Zirkle Johnston Obituary
George Zirkle Johnston

Loudon, TN

George Zirkle Johnston, age 86 of Loudon, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. The son of James Clarence Johnston and Mary Elizabeth Vann Johnston, Zirkle grew up in the Cave Creek community and attended school in Roane and Loudon Counties. During the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army Second Infantry Division and was stationed in Incheon and Chuncheon, Korea until the war ceased in 1953. After returning home, Zirkle attended Tennessee Tech University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in finance in 1958. He went on to work in the banking industry, serving thousands of East Tennesseans until he retired as Senior Vice President of First National Bank of Loudon County in 1993.

Zirkle had many interests including music, reading and golf, but he preferred uninterrupted time on his back porch. He enjoyed reflecting on days gone by and adventures with his brothers, sisters and old friends. More then anything, Zirkle loved God, the church, and his family. He married Linda Christopher in 1965, and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He instilled in his family, through words and by example, that service to God should always be the priority. He joined Cave Creek Primitive Baptist Church in 1963, served as song leader and deacon, and enjoyed fellowship with many, many life long friends in Christ. He fought a good fight and he kept the faith. Whether in song or in holding to the truths he treasured, Zirkle's strong and steady voice will be missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vann, Curtis and Tom Johnston; nephew, Bobby Pomfret. Survivors include his wife, Linda Johnston; son, John Johnston of Loudon; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Scott Carpenter of Maryville, Kathy and Edward Graham of Farragut; grandchildren: Katielynn and Jason Johnson, Jack Parrott, Lindsay Graham, and Jessie Graham; sisters and brothers-in-law, June and Wayne Cannon, Janis and Bob Pomfret; sisters-in-law, Pat Johnston, Betty Johnston and Carolyn Morton along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 13th at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. with Elders J. B. Huskey, Mickey Wilson and Chuck Canaday officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in the Cave Creek Cemetery for graveside services. Full military honors will be conducted by the Loudon Co. Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cave Creek Primitive Baptist Church, in care of Linda Edwards, 188 Post Oak Valley Road, Rockwood, TN 37854. Click Funeral Home, 109 Walnut Street, Lenoir City is in charge of arrangements. www.clickfuneralhome.com
