Knoxville - Homer C. Wilkins age 96, passed away on September 2, 2019. He was born on May 28, 1923, in Caneyville, Kentucky. His early schooling was in a two-room schoolhouse in Spring Lick and he then graduated from Caneyville High School in 1941. Homer attended Harvard University with a major in physics and graduated with honors in 1944. After two years of teaching at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, he returned and earned an MS at Harvard and a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis. He taught physics at Grinnell College, Alfred University, and Mount Holyoke College. Homer worked for the National Science Foundation administering grants and then as a consultant to physics departments in the Carolinas and Virginia. When he was 50, he changed careers, earning an MSW in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina. His new career brought him to Knoxville as the Director of Overlook Mental Health Center. Upon retirement, he began a third career as a self-appointed itinerant Unitarian Universalist preacher, traveling the country and speaking at churches as the opportunity arose. His unique story has inspired many. He leaves a son, Tom and daughter, Barbara, and their spouses; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
