James R. Barker, Sr., (Jim) passed away peacefully at the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Thursday, August 9, 2018. Jim was born in Fulton, Kentucky, the son of the late Ross and Mabel Anderson Barker. First Sergeant Barker retired from the U.S. Army having served two tours in Vietnam, three tours in Germany, and one in Korea. He was a lifetime member of the AmVets. Jim moved to East Tennessee in 1978 when he transferred from Louisville, Kentucky to Knoxville, Tennessee as a manager of Metropolitan Insurance Company. Following his retirement, he was a self-employed businessman. He was a graduate of Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Jim was a cancer survivor and stayed active by serving his community in various ways. He was a member of West End Baptist Church, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Newport, a member of the Cocke County Shrine Club, the Cocke County Gideons Camp, the Newport Masonic Lodge No. 234, and the Kerbela Shriners of Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John and Larry Baker, and sister, Betty McManus. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons, Kenneth C. (K.C.) of Newport, Robert J. Barker of Lakeland, Florida, and James R. Barker, Jr. (Jamie); daughter, Debbie Campbell of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Paige (Gavin) Hurst of Norris, Tennessee, Josh Campbell, Hailey Barker, and Christopher Barker; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Ramsey and Kimberlynn Kenny all of Knoxville; sister, Pat Johnson of Symsonia, Kentucky; and a host of many friends including best friend, Tip Brown. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm, Monday, August 13, 2018 at West End Baptist Church. Funeral Services will follow at 7:00 pm at West End Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Mooty officiating. A private graveside service was held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kiwanis Club of Newport or to Cocke County Shrine Club. Family and friends may sign the guest register online at Arrangements by Manes Funeral Home.
