KENDALLVILLE - Wayne L. Targgart, 91, of Kendallville, Indiana, died on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born on Sept. 2, 1934, in Wawaka, Indiana, to David A. and Edna (Peterson) Targgart.
Wayne honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958.
On Nov. 9, 1963, in LaGrange, Indiana, he married Judith "Judy" Hill.
He started his working career at Yoder Popcorn in Shipshewana and also worked at Sealed Power in LaGrange. He then worked at Farm Bureau Insurance in LaGrange and Domex in Kendallville. He retired as an insurance salesman and realtor at the Howe-LaGrange Agency in LaGrange.
A dedicated official for the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Wayne served for more than 50 years, officiating baseball, basketball, football and track. One of the highlights of his officiating career was working the Indiana State Baseball Tournament in 1974.
He was baptized at Cosperville Church and was a past member of the Wolcottville Lions Club.
Wayne enjoyed playing golf and attending the Indy 500 and Brickyard races, which he went to for many years. A devoted fan of Notre Dame Football and IU Basketball and sports in general, Wayne also cherished living on Westler Lake, where he made his home for 40 years. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his three granddaughters.
Surviving are his wife of more than 61 years, Judy Targgart, of Kendallville; two sons, Doug (Brenda) Targgart, of Wolcottville and Brad (Shari) Targgart, of Kendallville; three grandchildren, Taylor Targgart, of Indianapolis, Madison Targgart, of Kendallville and Meredith Targgart, of Kendallville; and two brothers, David (Marilyn) Targgart, of Fort Wayne and Larry Targgart, of LaGrange.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Rose Weaver.
Wayne's funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, S.R. 9, North, Wolcottville, with Pastor Angie Kidd and Pastor Regan Ford officiating.
Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Wolcottville.
Honor guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation is Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, from 2-7 p.m., at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
