Howard A. Collins Obituary
Howard A. Collins
Howard A. Collins, 82, passed away January 11, 2015, in a Seattle hospital. Born in Vaughn, Washington, on April 3, 1932, to Howard Axel Collins and Hazel Maude Chesman, Howard spent his early life in Gig Harbor. He graduated from South Kitsap High School, Port Orchard, in 1951 and joined the United States Navy shortly thereafter.
Following his Navy service, Howard completed his education at Grays Harbor Community College and Central Washington University, where he graduated with a degree in recreation. He taught survival skills at Central Washington University. In addition, Howard took various medical courses. In 1978 he began teaching English as a Second Language in Korea at the Seoul International University. Howard met Okcha Lee while he was working in Seoul. After a six-month courtship, the couple married December 21, 1979.
Howard and Okcha established their home in Ellensburg, Washington, in 1980. He worked at Bi-Mart for fifteen years, Knudsen Lumber Company for eight years, and served on the Ellensburg City Council for nine years. After retirement he helped his wife manage the Monterey Gardens Apartments, volunteered at Kittitas Valley Health Hospital, and was active in senior activities within the community. Howard enjoyed the outdoors, including picking berries in the summer, and was an avid reader.
One of Howard's greatest joys was spending time with his wife's nephews, Young Hoon Lee and Young Ho Lee, and niece, Mieun Choi, while they attended school at Central Washington University. All three lived with Howard and Okcha while they were in school. Howard was proud of their accomplishments.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his wife, Okcha Collins; one brother, Don (Loretta) Collins; two sisters, Alice (Ken) Hendrickson, and Mona (Dan) Joy; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Presbyterian Church, 1307 East Third, Ellensburg, Washington.
