Robert Lowell Thompson, 88 passed away on March 14, 2013 at his home in Ellensburg.
Bob was born in Everett, Washington to Donald and Gisla Thompson on July 25 1924. The family moved to Ellensburg in 1929. He went to high school at Ellensburg High and after graduation attended CWSC. He joined the Navy Air Force after two years at college and served until the end of the war. Upon his return, Bob went to the University of Washington, where he graduated from the school's first dental class in 1950. While at the U he married Patricia Pyle on February 5, 1947. Bob lost Patty after her extended battle with cancer. On September 21, 1979 he married Celia Underwood.
Bob had a love of the outdoors. Whether it was hunting, mushroom or berry picking, picnicking with friends or just exploring all the little back roads one could always expect a good time in his company. Golf was his game. It mattered little if he was fighting the springtime wind at the Ellensburg course or the Arizona heat during the winter months, the game was his passion. Bob was very artistic and enjoyed making intricate decorations and gifts. Everything from birdhouses to Disney characters to wedding rings came out of his basement workshop. Bob and Celia enjoyed traveling. Their excursions took them from Europe to Australia. His quick wit and good humor extended from his friends and family to the patients he had in his "old school" dental office. Shortly before his 80th birthday, Bob suffered a stroke leaving him with limited mobility. Celia excelled as his primary caregiver, her loving tenderness allowed him to remain at home until his death.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, wife Patty and brothers Donald Jr. and Kerwin Thompson.
He is survived by wife Celia, children Nancy Thompson, Robert Jr. (Cathy) Thompson, Terri (Paul) Schaake, Monte (Ona) Underwood, Mark (Peggy) Underwood and Mike (LaDonna) Underwood; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers a memorial donation to Hospice of Ellensburg is suggested.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held Saturday March 23, 2013 from 2:00 to 5:00pm at The Quality Inn of Ellensburg's conference room, 1700 Canyon Road.
