Lawrence Dean "Larry" Mayberry Obituary
Lawrence "Larry" Dean Mayberry, 82, of Ellensburg, Washington passed away January 11, 2018, surrounded by family at his home.
Larry was born on October 15, 1935 in Topeka, Kansas. He moved with his family to Ellensburg in 1948, where his father, Marshall Mayberry, taught botany at CWU for many years. Following in his father's footsteps as an educator, Larry graduated from CWU in 1957, and went on to teach at Morgan for the next 38 years. In that time, he primarily taught seventh grade social studies, and to many of those approximately 5400 students, he was a favorite teacher.
Early in his years as a teacher, Larry also served in the Army Reserves as a Sergeant E-5, and later in the Air Force Reserves as a Staff Sergeant. He was a popular tennis and bowling coach and his love for bowling led him to help bowling become a letter sport. He spent many Saturdays working at Rodeo City Bowl, bowling in leagues with his friends and family. He started golfing later in life and loved the exercise and the opportunity to hang out with friends.
Larry married Janice "Pat" Eslinger on June 5, 1960, and together they raised four children in Ellensburg. He was a true family man, and enjoyed spending time with his family and going on trips, his favorite being camping at Lake Easton State Park.
Larry loved the Ellensburg community and attended a wide range of events. From local sports with the Bulldogs and Wildcats, to various rodeo related events, to Jazz in the Valley, Larry took it all in. He was a man of genuine kindness with a knack for connecting with anyone he met. He will be deeply missed by his family, and a lifetime's worth of good friends.
Larry is survived by his wife Jan, and their four children Ron (Kim) Mayberry of Bonney Lake, Gail (Bill) Munden of Kittitas, Kelley (Tony) Helland of Ellensburg and Scott (Robin) Mayberry of Ellensburg; their grandchildren Brad, Kendahl, Michelle (Ron & Kim), Jennifer (Gail & Bill), Tony, Erika, Tim, Felicia (Kelley & Tony), Jordan, Maya (Scott & Robin); great grandchildren, Jalen, Cameron, Ethan (Tony), Avery, Faith (Erika & Gabe), Brayden (Brad); and his sister Carol (Dan) of Issaquah.
The family will hold a public Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 27th in the Manastash Room at the Kittitas County Event Center, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to provide school supplies and equipment to Morgan Middle School students. Donations can be sent to the Larry Mayberry Memorial Fund, c/o of Ellensburg Education Foundation, PO Box 464, Ellensburg, WA 98926.
