Mario Leon Obituary
January 19, 1938 - November 12, 2017

Mario M. Leon passed away on November 12, 2017, at the age of 79. He retired from the LA Dept. of Water and Power and moved to Thousand Oaks 17 years ago after being born and raised in The San Fernando Valley.

Mario was born in Van Nuys, California on January 19, 1938 to Jess Sr. and Lupe Leon. Mario was one of six sons, all who attended Saint Elizabeth Church and school, just like their mother. As well, Mario's four children also attended Saint Elizabeth. During this time, Mario and his wife, Ruth, would come to know other church families that would become their dear family friends since the early 1970's. Those valuable friendships still thrive today.

Mario began working with his father at the young age of 13. Jess Leon Sr. was a Contractor who owned Leon Paving Company. Throughout those years, Mario learned much from his father. By the age of 21 years old; Mario became a licensed Contractor and started his own company; Valley Excavating and Grading. At the same time; Mario attended Valley College to earn an Engineering degree. He furthered his studies in General Engineering, Construction, and Construction Contract Law. He also studied Project Management at the University of Chicago, IL.

Mario met his wife Ruth in February 1959. They were married on August 22, 1959 and were happily married for over 58 years. During their marriage, Mario and Ruth had four children: Danny, Carol, Gary and Jennifer.

Mario Leon is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Tracey Leon and Gary and Mia Leon; daughter, Carol Leon-Novoa; and daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Robert Garcia. Mario loved and enjoyed his nine grandchildren beginning with Brian, Kristen and Taylor Novoa; Tristan, Emma and Dillon Leon; Zoee, Emiley and Xavier Garcia, and one great-grandson, Jesse Poe. He was blessed with a large, loving family that included many nieces and nephews, and several Godchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Rudy, Alex, Sal and Richard Leon and their wives and children. Mario will also be missed by his in-laws, Frank and Hope Ruiz, Ronald and Lydia Ruiz, and Diane and Jimmy Lemus and by their children whom he loved very much.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 27th, 11:00 a.m., at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Rd., Newbury Park. Interment will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 1380 Fitzgerald Rd., Simi Valley. Further, the family is hosting a "celebration of Mario's life" luncheon to be held at the Los Robles Greens located at 299 S. Moorpark Road and right on Los Robles Greens Way. Arrangements are under the direction of Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, Thousand Oaks (805)230-2800.
