Mary Jane Woelfel Obituary

Mary Jane Woelfel, formerly of Covina, passed away peacefully at her home January 28, 2013 at the age of 91.
Mary was born Mary Jane Christina Hiatt on November 10, 1921, in Fresno to Harold and Christina (Erickson) Hiatt. Her father's family was of pioneer stock, involved in every phase of the Westward Movement. Her mother's family emigrated from Sweden. Mary grew up with her two brothers in the El Sereno section of Los Angeles and graduated from Wilson High School in Lincoln Heights. She worked for Occidental Life Insurance and the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power and then, during World War II, for Lockheed Aircraft. She met her husband, Bill Woelfel, at a Pasadena Civic Auditorium dance in late 1939. They were married on February 21, 1943 and in 1951 moved to a new subdivision on North Park Avenue in Covina. Their four children grew up in Covina and attended local schools. Bill worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power and Mary was employed by the L.A. County Library. They retired in 1979 and moved up the coast to Cambria.
Mary was a devout woman throughout her life. At age 9 she was baptized at the Angelus Temple by Aimee Semple McPherson. For many years she was involved at the First Presbyterian Church of Covina. In Cambria she led the Christian Women's Club and participated in choir and various prayer groups. She also served as a Hearst Castle Docent and was active in ladies' auxiliary groups.
Mary is survived by Bill, her husband of 70 years, by her children, Robert Woelfel of Fort Bragg, Roger Woelfel (Eve) of Cambria, Christina Westman of San Luis Obispo and Jeanne Aguilar (Paul) of Huntington Beach; by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; by her sister-in-law and lifelong friend Yolanda Hiatt; and by her many dear friends in the community. She enriched all of our lives. "Well done, my good and faithful servant..." - Mathew 25:21
