Meredith S. Hale M.D. Obituary
November 6, 1927 - August 13, 2018Dr. Meredith S. Hale graduated from University of Maryland with the Class of 1954, and from the University of Maryland School of Medicine with the Class of 1958. Prior to medical school, Dr. Hale entered the U.S. Army and joined the occupation forces in Germany. After WWII, he served as a training officer for Korean War inductees, and earned his Ranger badge at Fort Benning, Georgia. He continued to serve as a reserve officer after acceptance to medical school. After graduation from medical school, he returned to the U.S. Army and completed his medical internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, and then completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, California. His overseas duties in the Medical Corps were in Alaska (1959-1961), Vietnam (1965-1966), and Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii (1967-1969). During his military service, Dr. Hale was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal (oak leaf cluster), and the Combat Medical Badge. After retirement from the U.S. Army in 1969, Dr. Hale settled in Southern California, practicing his specialty at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Panorama City for ten years. He then served as Medical Director for Rehabilitation Services for Simi Valley Adventist Hospital, and then later for Northridge Hospital Medical Center. His last position was as Medical Director for Northridge Hospital Medical Center, until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Hale also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Northridge Hospital Foundation. During much of his professional time in California, Dr. Hale held teaching positions at University of California, Los Angeles, and at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society since 1957. He was a member of John Beale Davidge Alliance Silver Circle, a recognition society for major donors to the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Hale enjoyed traveling and hiking, and was an expert billiards and cribbage player. He is survived by his wife Carol, his sons Gilbert Hale and Dr. Robert Hale, his daughters Monica Darling and Glenda Hale, 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
