Rancho Bernardo -
Harry Birtwell "Bert" Ball, Jr., age 87, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2018. He was born on January 17, 1931 in Orange, NJ to Harry and Gladys Ball. Bert was just 16 years old when his father died, and thus began his entrepreneurial drive and many ambitions to help support his family. One of his first jobs, he'd proudly tell you, was as a milkman in New Jersey. Later, he worked for the Carvel Ice Cream Corporation, developing ice cream store franchises on the East Coast. After a visit to San Diego, CA in 1969, he and his wife Hilda were immediately sold on living in Rancho Bernardo. They made the move to the Gatewood Hills section of RB in 1970, along with their two sons, Kurt and Scott. Through the years, Bert and Hilda owned and moved into many other homes throughout the community, including: The Trails (by the old horse stables), on the golf course (near the Inn) and several other different RB neighborhoods. Bert lived in Seven Oaks until May 2016. The last two years, he shared his time living with both of his sons and six grandchildren between Texas and Wyoming.Bert was employed first by the original Rancho Bernardo Realty in the 1970's and worked with AVCO Community Developers. He loved RB, and soon became the owner and managing broker of RB Realty. He was a proud promoter of the Rancho Bernardo community, and was co-founder of the RB Chamber of Commerce, the RB Historical Society, the RB Brokers Association and the RB 10K Run. He was also involved with Junior Achievement, the St. Jude Children's Hospital and many other local service organizations. Bert was inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame in 1983, for his valuable contributions to the community. He then sold RB Realty to Merrill Lynch & Company in the 1980's and retired. In 1988, Bert and Hilda (and their horses) moved to Sea Ranch, CA along the coast of Northern California. But after several years, they decided to return to Rancho Bernardo, and in 1996, they did. Bert humbly liked to say that he began life "as just a clam-digger from the Jersey Shore" and for everyone to always "keep your faith and trust in God."Bert was preceded in death by both his parents; his wife, Hilda Ball (Hildegarde Mathilda Pretschner) on May 23, 2003; three brothers, Phil, Neil and Charles; and one sister, Carol. He is survived by his two sons; sister-in-law, Glenda Allard and her husband Al Allard of RB; sister-in-law, Karen Pretschner of Poway; brother-in-law, Robert Pretschner of Sarasota, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.Per his wishes, Bert will be cremated and his ashes will be mixed with those of his wife and together they will be interred alongside his family, at Greenwood Cemetery in Brielle, NJ.
