Therese "Terry" Whitcomb Obituary
Therese "Terry" Whitcomb 1930 - 2018 La Jolla Professor Emeritus Therese Whitcomb (Truitt) passed away in her La Jolla home on August 11, 2018. She was the daughter of James and Grace B. Truitt, and she lived in the very same home on the Barbour track section of La Jolla that her family moved into in 1952. She was the first to graduate from the University of San Diego in 1953, Whitcomb as she was known professionally, had become a beloved fixture on campus.Terry's relationship with USD included student, teacher, administrator, and for many years, as a contributor to the development of the galleries and a consultant in the design of the campus. No one in the history of the university has been a more tireless, more generous, and more effective advocate for the integration of campus aesthetics and academic excellence. Terry was chosen by her peers to Chair the fine arts department, a post she held for ten of the 35-years she taught at USD. She also became Curator of the USD collection, oversaw the renovation of many campus buildings, and the design to ensure the preservation of USD's architectural integrity. Terry's unique design aesthetic benefitted many local institutions including: Missions San Luis Rey and San Diego; Rancho Guajome, Vista; Casa de Estudillo, Old Town. She provided design services for many parishes across the Diocese of San Diego. She was a member of the Board of Trustee's for San Diego Museum of Art; San Diego History Center and the Timken Museum of Art. She was also involved with Service to Catholic Worker, Catholic Charities; Wednesday Club, San Diego; Jamestown Society; Nat'l. Society of Colonial Dames, and the Atheneum Library. Terry is survived by her children: Hope Hanafin (Robert Zuber, Ph.D.), Paul Hanafin (Frances), Hilary Hanafin, Ph.D (Steven Smith), Jim Hanafin (Kathleen), Heather Oles (Thomas), and Holly Curran; and 13 grandchildren. Whitcomb's husband, William Jacob Whitcomb preceded her in death. A celebration of life and Mass of Christian burial will take place on August 28, at 10:30 a.m., in The Immaculata Catholic Church, USD Campus. Reception to follow.
