Robert/Bob Nance (March 10, 1928 – October 17, 2018) was a kind generous man who could out hike others half his age and tell great stories. He had a gentle humor.
Bob grew up on "Moonshine Hill," Inspiration, AZ, above the copper mine smelter where his dad worked. During the depression, his father had a hard rock miner "Grub Stake" and lived in Grandfather's high Colorado mining cabins (circa 1912). Later generations have enjoyed summers at these "GOLD CREEK" cabins.
Bob earned his Arizona State BS in CHEMISTRY and was employed by the Los Alamos Lab in 1951. The United Church of Los Alamos became his faith family and he soon married member Emily Rosenquest. They lovingly raised 2 children, Betty Nance Smith and Robert A Nance. "Bopbop", as he was called, adored his granddaughters, Sheriden and Sonja (married to Sam Elson). With early retirement, Bob and Emily traveled extensively.
He conquered high mountain ridges yearly until his 80's. Later, at beloved Aspen Ridge, Bob said, "I need to do more walking," no matter how many he had done. Viola's restaurant was a weekly highlight and he downed many a burrito even when he said he wasn't hungry.
Bob's fulfilling career began at the Plutonium DP Site (1951) and ended at TA-55, retiring at age 60. He developed methods of plutonium chemical separation and purification. He recovered all of the plutonium residues from a fatal criticality accident at DP Site in 1958 and was responsible for the startup of new gloveboxes used for recovery of Americium. Known as a gentleman and excellent chemist, Bob mentored numerous scientists.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Emily R Nance, parents, Emily A and Francis Nance, brother Arnold and wife Gloria. He is survived by his son, Robert A Nance and wife Paula, daughter, Betty Nance Smith and husband Roger Smith, granddaughters, Sheriden Smith and Sonja (Smith) Elson plus husband Sam Elson. Bob also is survived and adored by many cabin-going cousins.
