Dr. A. Carol Ochs Hartman

LANCASTER: Surrounded by loved ones, Dr. A. Carol Ochs Hartman, PhD, 79, passed away early Tuesday morning, February 19, 2013, in her daughter's home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, after a courageous, 16-month battle with lung cancer.

Carol was born in Lancaster, Ohio on March 28, 1933 to Clarence M. and Frances Eymen Ochs, and grew up around the family business, Ochs Fruit Farm, which was established in 1872. After her graduation from Lancaster High School, Carol was married to Ronald W. Hartman.

Carol earned a BS in Education from Capital University in Columbus in 1964. She continued her education at Athens, and earned a Master of Education degree from The Ohio University in 1967. She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974 by The Ohio State University in Columbus.

Dr. Hartman spent the majority of her 41-year teaching career as the Head of Special Education at schools in Ohio, New York, Georgia, Louisiana, and Arizona. She retired as Head of Special Education, AMPHI School District, Tucson, Arizona, in 2005.

Prior to her illness, Carol managed the market at the Ochs Fruit Farm on Pleasantville Road in Lancaster, and was a life-long member of Emanuel Lutheran Church.

Carol is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sisters: Jane, Virginia, and Helen, and her brother, Paul Ochs. She is survived by her daughters, Victoria Gustafson of Fredericksburg, VA, and Cynthia Hartman of Live Oak, FL, brothers, Charles and Daniel Ochs of Lancaster, OH; six grandchildren: Amy, Angela, Lindsey, Laura, John and Ryan; and eight-and-a-half great-grandchildren: (Ella is on her way) Abigail, Jonathan, Olivia, Isaiah, Chance, Alyssa, Brooke and Hadley; and multitude of loving nieces and nephews.

Rev. Mark Raddatz will conduct a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 231 E. Mulberry St., Lancaster, OH 43130. Frank E. Smith Funeral Home in Lancaster is in charge of cremation, and no visitation is planned.

My sympathy on the loss of your mother. I always admired and loved your mom as we were growing up. I was really happy that I got to see her a couple of years ago on my visit to Lancaster. Prayers of peace to you both.
