Dorothy Hazle Dixon Phillips, 90, of Forest, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
For 66 years, she was the loving wife of the late Jack Phillips of Rockville Centre, New York.
Born Nov. 21, 1923, in Magnolia, Kentucky, she was proud to be an "undertaker's daughter" of the late Robert Lee Dixon and Grace Lee Hazle Dixon. Raised in Hodgenville, Kentucky, her job at Fort Knox led to a blissful married life in Long Island, New York with her special Lieutenant, and an active role in the 746 Tank Battalion Army reunions. Dottie taught nursery school and kindergarten at St. Andrews Episcopal School in Oceanside, New York. She loved genealogy research and spent many years as a volunteer Girl Scout troop organizer. Her grand sense of humor and fiery personality touched the hearts of everyone around her.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, Linda Newman and husband Leonard Newman, and Debbie Mays and her husband Larry Mays; a son, John D. Phillips III; grandchildren, John D. Phillips IV, Shawn Phillips, Christopher Weis, Josh Newman, Jason Newman, Amy Bethard, Jonathan Bethard, Lelia Mays; and great-grandchildren, Jazmin, Maya, Aidan, and Chase Phillips and Reece, Thomas, Jaylee and Alyson Newman.
Memorial contributions may be made to Centra Hospice or Goode Rescue Squad.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
