A Celebration of Life Service for Philippos Philippou will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 at 4 p.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, 1240 S. Espina in Las Cruces, New Mexico with Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, CSB officiating.
Philip died at the age of 56 in Athens, Greece on October 24, 2011 after a long and heroic battle with Parkinson's disease.
He is survived by his wife, Bibi; daughters, Eleni and Katy; son, Alex all of Mesilla; his mother, Eleni Philippou; sister, Stella Harous both of Cyprus, Greece. Philip was close to Bibi's immediate family, especially to her aunt, Elba Garcia-Burke. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and cousins all over the world.
Many remember Philip as a prominent and successful Mesilla Valley developer. He was most importantly a loving husband, father and friend.
Born April 7, 1955, in the small Cyprus village of Goudhi, he was the adored son of Theodosis and Eleni Philippou. He attended the English School in Nicosia and as a young man defended Cyprus during the Turkish invasion.
After serving several years in the Cypriot army, Philip emigrated to the United States in 1977 to attend the University of Texas at El Paso where he graduated with an engineering degree (metallurgy).
The Greek Orthodox culture commemorates the passing of a friend with: "May his memory be eternal."
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, Philip be remembered with donations to Villa Esperanza, the school that gave his family hope and his children an opportunity for a brighter future. Villa Esperanza specializes in education, speech and physical therapy for children with autism and developmental disabilities.
