Dr. Julian Josue Vigil, 72, a longtime resident of Guadalupita, N.M., passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018 in Guadalupita. He was born on Jan. 19, 1946 to parents Lazaro Vigil and Lilia Pacheco.
He was a Catholic and attended both Immaculate Conception and St. Gertrude Catholic Churches. Dr. Vigil was endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the education industry in November 2018.
Drawing on more than 50 years as a dedicated educator, Dr. Vigil is a leader in his field of education. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English and became an English teacher with West Las Vegas School.
Dr. Vigil then pursued a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in English and began teaching at the college level at institutions such as the University of Wyoming, University of New Mexico, Highlands University, Wichita State University, Vassar College, Bluefield State College and Luna Community College.
He was also inducted into the New Mexico Folklore Society Roll of Honor.
He retired in 2015 from Luna Community College. Dr. Vigil planned to continue to appreciate his retirement, which allowed him to explore his favorite subjects including linguistics, history and photography.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lazaro Vigil and Lilia Vigil and brothers Billie Vigil and Luis Vigil.
He is survived by his wife, Irene A. Vigil, of the family home; aunt Lita Leyba and family of Denver, Colo.; sisters-in-law Mary Pacheco (Orlando) and family of Amarillo, Texas and Martha Archuleta and family of Las Vegas, N.M.; brother-in-law Anthony Gurule (Martha) of Dallas, Texas; cousins Henry Morris and family, Henry Pacheco and family, Ben Pacheco and family, J.P. Chavez and family, Viola Duran and family and Wayne Johnson and family and numerous other relatives and many friends.
A rosary devotional service will be conducted Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, 9 a.m. A funeral service will follow the rosary, with both services to be held at Immaculate Conception Church, with Father George V. Salazar as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Guadalupita Cemetery in Guadalupita.
