February 11, 1930 - September 21, 2017 Lexington, South Carolina - Surrounded by loving family, Peter Nicholson Audé, Jr. passed away on Thursday evening, the 21st of September 2017. Peter was born on February 11th, 1930, New York City, NY. His growing up years were spent in Los Angeles, CA where he was a prodigious reader, student and Boy Scout. At 16 years of age Peter graduated from Los Angeles High School and started his freshman year at UCLA, graduating with a degree in business. Some of his fondest memories were of summers spent working in Yosemite National Park. While at UCLA Peter was a member of Sigma Pi Upsilon fraternity and the crew rowing team. Participating in ROTC, Peter received a reserve commission in the Army upon graduation from UCLA. He became a quartermaster officer, eventually receiving a regular Army commission, attended the Command and General Staff College and retired at the rank of full Colonel. Significant highlights of his military career include 1964 Alaska earthquake recovery operations, command of the 502d Supply and Transportation Battalion, Fort Hood, TX, and a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. During Peter's career, he and his wife Betty Sue raised three children while at duty stations in Bordeaux, France; San Leandro, CA; Fort Lee, VA; Fort Richardson, Alaska; Fort Hood, Texas; Stuttgart and Mannheim/Worms, Germany. For over twenty years Peter resided in the Brandermill Retirement Community, Midlothian, VA. He moved to the Presbyterian Home, Lexington, SC in 2015 to be closer to family. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Rose (MacKerness) Audé and Peter Nicholson Audé, Sr.; an infant son John Eric Audé and his sister Beverly Rose Ardin. Peter Audé is survived by his former wife, Betty Sue Audé, daughter Susan Audé and son Peter Gregory Audé of Columbia, SC; son Steven Nicholson Audé and his wife Patsy of Leavenworth, KS.; granddaughter Blythe Daniel Fisher of Nashville, TN; half-sister Christie Crahan of Glendale, CA; first cousins Diana Blanchard of St. Louis, MO., and Stephanie Wright of San Marcos, CA. Peter was a lifelong learner and avid reader of books. He was a member of various military associations as well as bird watching, photography, wildlife art and nature clubs. He was a proud UCLA alumni and supporter of the crew/rowing program. Peter enjoyed extensive worldwide travel upon retirement including China and South America. His recent day to day pastimes included watching and playing the stock market, enjoying the local arts and symphony; receiving calls and visits from his family. His family and those who knew him will sorely miss his strong and abiding love and presence in their lives; his joy and ever present sense of humor at life's turn of events. Even at the end of his life, Mr. Aude' shone a light of goodness into his corner of the world. He was a kind friend to my parents, Hugh and Nather Gray, who lived at the Presbyterian Community.
