Gabor Szekeres Obituary
January 1, 1944 - November 27, 2010
Gabor passed away on Nov 27th, 2010 after a short, unexpected illness. He was born in Budapest, Hungary during WWII. He defected and then immigrated to the US in 1966 with his wife. He finished his studies at SUNY Buffalo in 1971, obtaining a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry and later graduated from law school in 1977 and became a patent attorney for the next 33 years. He devoted much of his life to his family, friends and various hobbies, including hiking, archery, hunting, camping, canoeing, flying a glider, sailing, traveling, and woodworking. Gabor loved to be in the woods at his southern Utah cabin. Gabor was an incredible linguist, speaking and studying nine languages. He was also an avid reader, history buff, and loved to teach others. He is survived by his wife Agnes, son David and wife Sarah, son Jeffrey and wife Amy, and three beautiful grandchildren, Carson, Jackson and Brooke.
A Memorial Service will be held Dec 5th 11 AM at Harbor Lawn - Mt. Olive Memorial Park & Mortuary at 1625 Gisler Avenue, Costa Mesa, California 92626. Your memory will live in our hearts.

I worked with Gabor as Patent Counsel at Allergan, where Gabor did absolutely stellar work for Allergan's chemical patent portfolio. Gabor was not just a great patent attorney and a pleasure to work with, but a man I truly admired. He knew what was important in life, and although we were not social friends, he seemed to live life fully. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, and hope that his family obtains some solace from knowing that he touched many people who had the privilege of knowing him.

Although I've not spoken to Gabor in a year or two, it was a pleasure to work with him on joint-client legal matters and to hear about his trips to Utah. I was very sad to hear of his passing and I will be praying for his family and friends during the coming days.

Gabor was my cousin and I will miss him. He wrote an incredible memoir, Freedom by Choice, that is both a powerful and evocative documentation of his personal experiences in Hungary during both nazism and communism, and an articulate and sweeping historical narrative. It's published and available through Amazon and other places.
