Guess, Michael
February 27, 1953 - December 31, 2010
Studio City, CA--Michael Leroy "Rudy" Guess, 57, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2010 at his Studio City home. The cause of death was Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Born in Miami, FL to parents Ivan "Ike" and Shirley Guess, Rudy grew up in both Florida and Scottsdale, AZ. As a young boy, he picked up a guitar, which became his first love and his livelihood. He studied multiple instruments in elementary school and high school, participated in the Saguaro High School marching band and began to play in rock bands with his friends. Rudy studied music and songwriting in college, and then devoted his time to being a full-time musician, traveling around the US, playing in various bands, and eventually settling in Los Angeles. He wrote and recorded his own songs, later becoming engineer, and producer in his own studio, recording demos and albums for himself and other artists.

One of those artists was Carole King. She was so impressed by Rudy's work and personality that she made him her musical director and co-producer on a number of her albums. Rudy then became a core member of her live band and toured extensively with her. In recent years, Rudy wrote music for commercials, film and television. As an artist, he wrote and produced songs for his own CDs: "Rudy and the Surf Kings", "El Surfeador", "Rudy and the Surf Kings Do Christmas", and with The Rudy Guess Orchestra recorded "Still Lucky", a Big Band orchestra recording.

Rudy was blissfully married to Lorna Guess for 28 memorable years. They enjoyed a life filled with music, travel, and their cherished pets. They lovingly built their home over the years, making it a reflection of their interests and tastes. It was a warm place where family and friends were always welcome, especially at the Rudy Bar.

Rudy had a profound influence on many people he met and worked with and will be remembered by his smile and his special ease.

He is survived by his wife Lorna Guess; their three dogs, Lilly, Natasha and Zooey; his parents, Ike and Shirley Guess of Phoenix, AZ; his brother and sister-in-law Mitch and Teri Guess, and their children Matthew and Kimberly Guess of Clifton, VA; his nephews Brandon Miller, Josh Miller and Jason Moulding; and countless dear friends everywhere.

A service is planned for Rudy's birthday, February 27, 2011, at Hollywood Forever in Hollywood, CA. It will be a celebration of Rudy's life, filled with stories and song. Not a day goes by,
that I don't think of you.

After all this time,
you're still right here, it's true.

Somehow you remain,
locked so deep inside.

Not a day goes by....

Miss you, Michael Guess

Lorna,
First off I'm so very sorry for the loss of Rudy. I know it's been a lifetime ago since we have spoken. I was looking on Teddy's Facebook page and saw that Rudy had passed and the first thing that came to my mind was Rudy's last night playing with the Team at the red onion in Redondo Beach and the cake I gave him made to look like his red guitar and you putting the cake in his face. I know I must have a picture of it somewhere. I can remember exactly when and where I met your amazing husband. God bless him. John

Rudy was magic. He was a ray of sunshine and a constant smile to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him...whether it was for one minute, one hour, one day, or one year. I am one of those people.

This world is dimmer, less magical and less interesting without Rudy in it.

Rudy, just stopping in to see you like I do so often. I miss you something terrible. The world is just not the same without you making it better with your smile and your guitar. You are so many things…. one of a kind we were all lucky enough to share our lives with for what turned out to be not long as any of us would have wanted. You made a lifetime mark on each of us. There is no on better than you… Lorna's best thing, she would say….. She had great taste and she knew the real deal…… I hope you are around checking on us all. We will see you on the other side…..
