Aileen Leftow COHEN Obituary
July 22, 1936 - August 21, 2016 Aileen was born in New York City to Jack Leftow and Bertha Kaplan. The family moved to New Mexico when Aileen was less than a year old. She met her future husband at a square dance in Albuquerque, got married young and moved to Los Angeles where she earned her bachelor's degree in math and master's in education at UCLA. While raising twin boys, Aileen went on to an illustrious career teaching math at Hughes Jr. High and in the highly gifted magnet programs at Portola and Van Nuys High. She earned numerous awards including the "outstanding math teacher" of Los Angeles. Aileen enjoyed tennis, dancing, bridge, snow and water skiing, hiking and lots of traveling having been to every continent. She was also very involved with the Assistance League for over a decade. Aileen was respected by her fellow teachers and loved by her friends who saw her as being very loyal, honest and hardworking. Aileen is survived by her husband, Arnold and two sons, Art (Sarita) of Encino and Alan (Leah) of Chicago, her sister Sandra Smalley of Surprise, AZ, and five grandchildren, Lauren, Aliza, Avishai, Ariel, and Ayala. A memorial service was held on Monday, August 22 at Mount Sinai of Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Home for the Aged in Reseda, CA.
