Alan Taylour English Obituary
March 14, 1934 - October 21, 2016 Alan Taylour English passed away on October 21, 2016 in Summit, NJ. Born a fourth-generation Californian, in Los Angeles, his parents were Walter A. English, a petroleum engineer and Chief Scientist at Standard Oil, and Lucille Curtis English, a speech and music educator. His brother, William W. English, predeceased him. Alan attended the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes and Black Foxe Military Institute. He received a BS in Metallurgy from Stanford University in 1956, where he met his wife, Jerry Fitzgerald English; they were married in 1955. Alan was president of Phi Kappa Sigma while at Stanford. Commissioned in the US Navy in 1956, he served on the USS Essex as a Communications Officer. He then attended MIT, receiving a Ph.D. in metallurgy in 1963. Alan then joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ as a member of its technical staff, where he received numerous patents and published applied research papers, later serving as Head of Global Customer Programs. The smartest and nicest guy in the room, Alan loved playing the guitar, singing, hiking, sailing, traveling, learning new languages, and challenging his mind. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, his four children, seven grandchildren, and sisters-in-law Barbara Lee English and Patricia Fitzgerald. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.
