Alice R. Eckman Obituary
Alice Regina (Ellis) Eckman, born to Ralph Neely Ellis and Marguerite Johanna Robb Ellis in Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2016. She was 87. Alice moved to California with her family when she was in third grade. She attended El Monte High School and was an active member in many service organizations, graduating in June 1946. Alice entered UCLA and pledged Alpha Delta Pi spending four wonderful years making lifelong friends and working as a Red Cross representative for Alpha Delta Pi. She graduated from UCLA in 1950 and began teaching at Encentia Elementary School and later at Muscatel Middle School, both in the Rosemead Elementary School District. Alice married her husband of 53 years, John Richard Eckman, in 1953 and lived in Temple City. They moved to Hacienda Heights in 1956. Alice began teaching in the Hacienda La Puente USD in 1960. She taught at Kwis, Hillgrove and Los Robles Schools. Alice and John raised four children and were very active in all of their activities. Alice served as team manager for her daughters' (Marcy and Nan) Bobby Sox Softball teams and was a band booster parent for Los Altos High School where three of her children were in the band and her son Jim was the Drum Major. She was very active in St. John Vianney Parish when it was first established in 1965, and was a devoted parishioner until her death. Alice served two years as president of the East San Gabriel Valley Panhellenic, and served on the UCLA Scholarship Committee. She retired from full time teaching in 1986. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for several years and served as a Board Member. In 1990, Alice became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and remained active with them in her retirement years, serving as Treasurer for several years and as DAR Chapter Regent twice in the John Greenleaf Whittier Chapter. Alice was extremely proud of her four children and all of their accomplishments. She was also a proud and devoted Grandmother (Oma), attending Laura's and John Patrick's games, swim meets and band performances whenever possible. Alice is survived by son John Michael Eckman (Mary), daughters Marcy J. Eckman and Nanette Eckman Hall (Jimmie), grandchildren Laura Michelle Eckman and John Patrick Eckman, sister-in-law Joni Ellis and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband John, her son James Ralph Eckman and her brother James E. Ellis. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 7th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1345 Turnbull Canyon Rd., Hacienda Heights.
