Allen Klingensmith Obituary
March 29, 1924 - May 2, 2017 Allen "Big Al" Klingensmith, 93, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2017 surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Pat, sons Ken (Solange), Jim, John (deceased), daughter Julie Coleman, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born March 29, 1924 in Long Beach, California, to Charles and Rose (Francis Herndon) Klingensmith, moved to Riverside with his mother after the terrible 6.3-magnitude earthquake of 1933, graduated from Riverside Mesa High School, then from UCLA, fought in the US Army at the Battle of the Bulge, then returned to graduate from Hastings Law School in 1951. After graduation he was hired by the Los Angeles City Attorney's office and was in charge of their West Los Angeles office. After a few years he joined Spray, Gould and Bowers. Desiring to move to the beach, he opened up his own law office in Huntington Beach. After a long and successful legal career he took on being president of Los Angeles Chemical Company (LACCO) from which he eventually retired to travel the world with Pat, family and friends. He was a very friendly, generous man who loved being with family and contributing his time and leadership - often as president - to service organizations including the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Jonathan Club, Rotary, Elks, Shriners International, the Boys Club, Boy Scouts of America (he was an Eagle Scout) and California Elwyn. When asked about values, lessons, advice and what he would bestow upon his legacy, Al commented: get an education. It is very important to do this and to make this an absolute priority. Save your money as you start earning it. Get married to the love of your life and have a family. Go to work and work hard. He was a humble man who never bragged about what he had done or been through. He was one of our Greatest Generation. In lieu of flowers, please honor Big Al by donating to the Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 3970, Orange, CA 92857 stating "In memory of Allen Klingensmith."
