Alston graduated from Marymount High School in Los Angeles, and attended Dominican College and U.C. Davis where she was one of the first women enrolled in Enology Studies. While at U.C. Davis she met Tom M. Lewis who had recently returned from service in World War ll. Alston and Tom married in 1948 and eventually settled in the Napa Valley where they worked at the Ahern's family pioneering winery, Freemark Abbey. To this day, the Ahern family continues to farm, growing grapes for Freemark Abbey. The couple and their children, Angele, Patrick, Amy Ann, Thomas 'Tiger' and Andrew all grew up on Sierra Avenue in Napa. Alston was active in the newly built Bel-Aire neighborhood and was sought out for advice by many of the young parents. Alston was particularly proud of her Catholic faith and played an integral and active part in the establishment of St. Apollinaris Catholic Church and School. Alston hosted many dinners and outings for the St. A's nuns including road trips to Lake Tahoe. Alston and Tom divorced in 1973 and she later married Captain (USN Retired) John Nelson 'Mike' Horrocks. Alston and Mike started a new life in Washington D.C. During their 25 years in Washington, D.C. Alston and Mike became very involved in Washington's political scene and enjoyed spending time with Mike's children, Erin Findlay (deceased), Brigid Davis, Michael Horrocks, Nora Moseley, Harry Horrocks and their families. Mike and Alston traveled the world together and spent happy times visiting their children and grandchildren scattered across the country. After Mike's death in 1996, Alston moved back to Los Angeles. Following her Catholic faith, Alston became very involved in St. Paul the Apostle Church of Los Angeles. Alston was very active in senior activities at the church and made many new friends. Alston was also a lifetime supporter of the St. Helena Catholic Church. Alston's faith and belief in God granted her the strength to endure the deaths of husband Mike, son Tom and her former husband Tom M. Lewis, all in 1996, as well as the passing of her grandson, Jack Lewis in 2011. Alston will always be remembered for her beauty, grace, charm, generosity, elegance and staying up on current events.
